How would the Old Firm fare in the English Premier League?

Recommended Posts

I think the pressure to win, would be the ultimate downfall....

The fans are used to winning week in, week out - they expect to win EVERY match. The fans expect to win the league each year....a baw-hair from winning is only just accepted. Would the fans be able to cope with the possibility/probability of not winning each week???

It would take MANY, MANY season to get into the EPL. Once there, would be seriously be able to compete with the big boys, on a weekly basis??? True, the level of player would be better, but as Calscot says, the debt would also increase. Don't forget as well....would we get to play in Europe again??? There would be many season where that just wouldn't be possible, but once in the EPL, would we be able to finish in the top 6???

Overall, I just don't see it happening. Rangers are a massive fish, in a tiny pond.....by moving down south, they would change to a small fish in a massive pond (initially).

We'd need to basically buy a new first XI every season if we went the bottom up route in England and how long would fans patience last if for example we missed out on promotion from League 1 in 4 years time? Still, the game up here is royally f***ed so it may be a better option in the long run.

In theory, we could compete anywhere. The crux of the issue however is the squad and the management team. That's what creates success. Look at "big" teams like Wolves, WBA, (until recently) Man City and Newcastle. Spurs as well. The squad and management are crucial. Crowds of 50k to 60k doesn't guarantee success.

Yes, I think Newcastle showed that but then they currently show that you can't keep a big club down. It doesn't guarantee success but it certainly helps in the long run.

One thing about the way English clubs are spending money is that they are investing in the current squad for the here and now and not doing much for the future. This is very good for us as it means that we're not really suffering with the present difference in income and could easily catch up in a few seasons if we gained entry to their league or one which gave us parity in TV and sponsorship money.
