The Transfer Rumours and Deals - Thread January 2013

Australian goalkeeper Mat Ryan has called off a trial with Rangers after failing to receive assurances from the club over their future league placement.

The Central Coast Mariners player was due to travel to Scotland on Monday, coming to Murray Park at the second time of asking after a trip earlier in the month was cancelled due to injury.

Ryan had received criticism in Australia for his decision to train with a Third Division side, with former Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich amongst those speaking out against the move for the twice capped 20-year-old.

Central Coast's general manager, Lawrie McKinna, took to Twitter to explain the reason for Ryan deciding against making the trip to link up with Ally McCoist's side.

"Mat Ryan will not be going to Rangers on Monday," he said.

"[His] reason for not going on trial next week was that he wanted to know what league they will play and they won't know yet."

League reconstruction proposals for a new Scottish setup would see Rangers move up to the third tier next season along with the other nine clubs in the current Third Division.

That possibility has angered chief executive Charles Green, who believes the current campaign would be rendered meaningless.

Any hopes held by Rangers of being accelerated through the leagues under the new setup were dashed by Scottish football chiefs earlier this week.

Ryan is the first choice goalkeeper for current A-League leaders Central Coast Mariners, making 19 appearances this term.

Then he knows what league we'll be playing in, no?
