SPL clubs give 'unanimous backing' to proposed reforms

ROSS COUNTY chief Roy MacGregor last night dropped a SPL bombshell after insisting he is prepared to grant Staggiesâ?? fans their wish and vote against the controversial 12-12-18 proposals.

 

The Dingwall chairman was part of the SPL meeting on January 28 which agreed to continue working towards implementing the new structure in time for next season.

 

But he admitted he will be forced to stand against it after facing overwhelming opposition from his clubâ??s supporters.

 

The stance has fired the SPL move to the verge of collapse as it will require an 11-1 vote to force it through, along with a 75 per cent majority of SFL clubs, with Rangers excluded as an associate member.

 

The steering group leading the plans are putting together a rule book and top flight clubs are set to meet to vote next month.

 

The clubs have all agreed on the merging of the league bodies and for a fairer distribution of finances.

 

But the main stumbling block remains the structure of the divisions â?? with the split into three mini-leagues of eight too much for the Dingwall fans to swallow.

 

MacGregor said: â??I thought it would be 50/50 but at our fansâ?? forum it was more like 97 per cent against the proposals.

 

â??I was quite shocked. At the last SPL meeting we reached a consensus to keep going down this route on principle â?? but that was before we spoke to the fans.

 

â??The supporters are not being asked for their opinion and it was something I was keen to get. Clubs are the fans. Without them you donâ??t have a club.

 

â??So it is important they have a voice. I understand their concerns. You wouldnâ??t go into a super market and buy half a tin of beans. I donâ??t think it will matter how we vote if there are 11 SPL clubs who want to push it through. But itâ??ll be interesting to see feedback from fans at other clubs.â?

Perhaps he's also beginning to realise that the monies promised in these proposals won't materialise without us . If CG says he won't sign next season's SKY deal then these proposals are a non-starter.
