Financial distribution model for Scottish league reconstruction - STV

STV reveals the new distribution model (<- link)

The team finishing top of Scotlandâ??s second tier stands to make at least £319,000 more than present under plans to restructure the countryâ??s football leagues.

The financial distribution model for the 12-12-18 plan has been revealed by Kilmarnock in a document released to supporters, as the SPL and SFL attempt to push forward their proposal in time for next season.

It shows the teams finishing in the top two positions in the top flight will stand to lose a near-combined £1m, sides finishing third to eighth taking a small hit, and teams from places nine to 24 in the country standing to make more cash.

It is not yet clear whether the bulk of finance will be allocated to clubs based on their positions in the top two leagues at the end of the first phase of the season, or on their final placings at the end of the campaign.

Teams from positions 25 to 42 under the new system stand to make no additional money than at present. The winner of the â??National Leagueâ?, would make £54,000, the same amount the team currently finishing fifth in the Second Division earns.

Provision is made in the proposals for any additional revenue made by the league to be redistributed in three stages.

The first extra £900,000 made by the league would be given to the clubs participating in the "Play-off 8" league, with the winners gaining an additional £200,000 and the bottom club adding £25,000 to their total.

The next £200,000 made over and above the initial £900,000 would be distributed evenly amongst the bottom 18 clubs, with each gaining an additional £11,100.

If a further £900,000 is made, it will be divided between the "Premiership 8", with the season winners adding £200,000 and the team finishing eighth gaining £25,000.

The current SPL stands to surrender a total of £1,309,000 in total prize money, with £1,751,000 reallocated to the nationâ??s next 12 clubs.

The proposal shown by Kilmarnock highlights two possible distribution amounts, presumably based on discussions currently being held over TV and sponsorship deals. The percentages remain the same.

Now wait, the money-rich CL-bound Hooped Horrors pay less than half than the runner's up? That will go down well with ICT or Motherwell, no doubt. Not to mention that the latter two will cough up 10 times as much as the third side, who get nigh the same money in the first place.

Some quick points:

1. Based on my quick calculations, the total guaranteed pot contains an extra £437k (based on the sum of the additions and reductions per above). Where is this money coming from?

2. Why would teams 25 to 42 sign up to this? They only stand to receive additional distributions based on notional additional sums which are not guaranteed.

I'd imagine most of the top 24 teams might be happy to sign up, but its going to take more than to convince the rest of them I'd imagine.

This sort of half-baked and rushed stab at financial re-distribution is just typical of the SFA and SPL.

They state that the team ending 13th gains an extra £319 ,000 but when do they get this , after the 22 game mini league or after the split of 3x8

Surely for sporting integrity its got to be after the shambolic little league set up is finished, so the team in 9th and a possible £1mill could suddenly find themselves finishing 16th and a lowly £250k.

and celtic agreed to lose £319k every year did they?

Knowing they'll get topped up? Yes. Anything to make it look like 'we're all in this together' but ensuring they don't suffer at the same time.

Lessons are being taken from David Cameron.

As many as four teams could win promotion into the second tier of Scottish football each season under league reconstruction plans.

The joint SPL and SFL proposal for a 12-12-18 structure, which splits into mini-divisions after two rounds of games, will also include a play-off system between the second phase “Championship Eight” and the National League, the proposed third tier.

The eight bottom clubs in the Championship after 22 matches will go into the Championship Eight, playing each other home and away to complete 36 games across the season.

The two teams finishing bottom of the Championship Eight will automatically be relegated to the National League, replaced by the two sides finishing top of the third tier.

A play-off system between the two leagues will then come into effect and will include the teams finishing in positions three to six in the National League, as well as the sides ending the season fifth and sixth in the Championship Eight.

The end-of-season competition would work in two parts. Firstly, the four clubs in the play-off spots in the National League would play against each other, with third playing sixth and fourth playing fifth.

The winners of those two ties would then go on to take on the two clubs from the Championship Eight, with the winners of those final ties taking up a place in the next season’s Championship.

Play-offs stage one

Game A: National League Third Place v National League Sixth Place Game B: National League Fourth Place v National League Fifth Place

Play-offs stage two

Game C: Winner of Game A v “Championship Eight” Sixth Place Game D: Winner of Game B v “Championship Eight” Fifth Place

Outcome

The winners of Game C and D are awarded a place in the Championship (second tier) for the forthcoming season.

The winners of Game C and D are awarded a place in the National League (third tier) for the forthcoming season.
