ONE WEEK after the onset of the latest full-blown crisis inside Ibrox it is time to ask again: Just where is Malcolm Murray in all of this and what exactly is he doing to protect his club?

 

â??Never hurry a Murrayâ? is the Rangers chairmanâ??s favourite catchphrase but while he dawdles his business is eating itself alive.

 

In fact, he might wish to consider what has happened to some of his namesakes in recent years. Sir David, Paul, Ian and Neil have all left the club for various reasons. Theyâ??re even supposed to be taking the Murray out of Murray Park, arenâ??t they?

 

And if current chairman Murray fails to grab control of what is happening under his watch, he too will find his time is up.

 

He has already been fortunate to survive one coup amidst much shameful smearing of his name but itâ??s his perceived reluctance to tackle chief executive Charles Green head on which might finish whatâ??s left of his own credibility.

 

So is Murray already a lame duck? Well, letâ??s first examine how this narrative has developed since last Friday when the loathsome Craig Whyte burst back in through the front doors of Ibrox and lobbed a hand grenade at the foot of the old marble staircase.

 

By leaking recordings of conversations he had with the increasingly rattled Green, Whyte was publicly ambushing a former accomplice. His tapes proved Green had been guilty of blatantly lying as to the true extent of the relationship between this pair, not only to the fans but also to the SFA. A guilt Green has since been forced to admit.

 

It must not be forgotten that the governing body only agreed to allow Rangers to start playing again on August 8 last year after receiving written assurances that Whyte was not involved in Greenâ??s £5.5million takeover.

 

And the fact the SFA have now demanded â??clarityâ? from Green on this matter should shake Rangers fans to their bones because if it should now be decided that deliberate deception took place in order for this licence to be handed over, then Stewart Regan will face one almighty conundrum unless Rangers act now to distance themselves from their own chief executive.

 

Yet eight days on and Murray continues to say nothing, which is really quite astonishing.

 

On Wednesday, police were raiding properties in an attempt to gather evidence which may prove illegality occurred when Whyte bought the club in May 2011. Those same officers may even be looking for links between Whyte and Green which could also destroy the current regime.

 

If that was not bad enough, it came at a time when manager Ally McCoist is engaged in a power struggle with Green who has asked him to consider sacking his right-hand men, Ian Durrant and Kenny McDowall, in order to save his own skin.

 

This was yet another crass move by a chief executive who, if nothing else, excels in crudeness and who seems committed to isolating and undermining McCoist. Maybe even sickening him into breaking his promise never to walk away. Contrary to a couple of hopelessly ill-informed reports, McCoist did not deny having been told this by Green. He denied entering into discussions about it which is entirely different.

 

This is one conversation he has no wish to engage in which is why he refused to answer questions on our story after reading out a carefully worded prepared statement. When pushed he said simply: â??Ask Charles.â? Which was his way of admitting the Record was right yet again.

 

So now we have the cops piling in through the doors, the manager admitting he is at war with his chief executive, the chief executive admitting he colluded with Whyte during his own takeover, not to mention being hauled up on a charge of racism by the SFA, a player sacked after being hoaxed by some obsessive internet extremist, a chief scout being bulleted and wrongly accused of malpractice, a physio axed without the managerâ??s consent. And, not forgetting, the possibility of a dispute with the SFA over whether or not the club should be allowed to operate at all.

 

And still the chairman says nothing? There is a very real danger Murray might hear himself quacking when he finally does decide to open his mouth. He may already be beyond lame. He may be crispy aromatic.

 

That would be a dreadful shame because Murray has been far from idle behind the scenes over the last seven days. He knows exactly what must be done to save the reputation of his club.

 

It is my belief he wants Green and Sevco cohorts Imran Ahmad and Brian Stockbridge overthrown. Heâ??s just having much more trouble making it happen than he ought to.

 

Murray is a stickler for corporate governance and is determined to be seen to be doing things in a correct and proper manner â?? all of which is admirable. But his reluctance to show leadership, to communicate with the supporters and to explain to them his position does him no favours at all. In fact, it makes him look weak almost to the point of being incompetent. So, once again, it falls on this newspaper to inform the fans of what is really going on. The truth is Murrayâ??s board is not yet entirely unified but only because one of his four non-executive directors has yet to be persuaded to mow Green down. This presents Murray â?? and those who do agree with him â?? with a problem because failure to act is no longer an option.

 

Having broadly agreed some form of action must be taken, stock market protocol dictates they will now be expected to stand by their convictions.

 

That action could take the form of suspensions pending internal investigations into the conduct of Green, Ahmad and Stockbridge. It could even lead to termination of their contracts. Or, alternatively, the club carries on regardless, on this journey towards complete and utter chaos.

 

But if no agreement is reached on how to deal with Green and his sidekicks then resignations from the board can be expected. It would be no surprise at all if Walter Smith was one of the first to step down given his disgust at what is going on.

 

Serious questions must also be asked. Have significant sums been shuffled halfway around the globe? If so, why? And what is the clubâ??s connection with Singapore?

 

Come to think of it, has Murray or any of his non-execs actually seen a club bank statement since Green boasted around £23m was dumped in there following a pre-Christmas share issue? If not, why not?

 

All of the above must be addressed if Murray is to survive this crisis with his position secure and his board intact. What they cannot do is nothing. So one question remains. Is the Rangers chairman a lame duck or a lionheart?

Of course it is and our club has been put in a perilous position here. My own opinion is that a clearout of Green, Ahmad and Stockbridge would be an admission of guilt which could kill the club. They'd walk off gagged and be either unable or unwilling to defend themselves and in turn the club as the witchhunt ensued.

 

That's not sensationalist nonsense. It's the obvious conclusion drawn from events last Summer and again over the past week. Howver despite the best efforts of the Mhedia and the dark forces at work in Hampden the fact remains we can only be our own undoing here.

That's a very hard hitting piece, frankly we ignore it at our peril, I'm no longer in any doubt there are serious issues at the club now. The Record, whatever some think of it, didn't pen that without being sure of its veracity.

 

People we can be sure love the club are unhappy with some of the decisions being made by some of the people running it, that should concern is. The point about Regan and the SFA is alarming, the last thing we need is giving them any cause to come after us again.
