Rangers have offered a trial to Argentine defender Cristian Trombetta

Rangers have offered a trial to Argentine defender Cristian Trombetta, who is available as a free agent.

The 26-year-old is out of contract after leaving Mexican side Jaguares de Chiapas and has travelled to Scotland to train with Rangersâ?? first team squad.

Rangers manager Ally McCoist and his coaching staff are running the rule over the defender as they look to strengthen their squad for next season.

Currently subject to a signing embargo, the Ibrox club can offer contracts to players now but cannot register them with the Scottish FA until September 1.

Trombetta is one of the players McCoist is considering and is being given a chance to show what he can do at Murray Park.

The 6 foot 2 inch defender, who can play centrally or at left-back, began his career at Nueva Chicago in his native Argentina. He then spent a year at Leixoes in Portugal before returning home to play for Tigre and Arsenal.

Trombetta moved to Mexican side Jaguares in 2012 but left after failing to hold down a regular first team place.

Why does every outfield player we are linked have to be able to play either... Or...?

I can remember the days we used to sign a player and said hes a left back and he plays at left back funnily enough! We got used to those so called versatile players during Walter's second reign

I really hope half these players the media are linking us with don't get anywhere near Ibrox. McCoist should be getting reports on every young player about to be released by the major clubs. Not nobodies who will offer nothing to the club

Big Derek...best versatile player EVER

Really? CH or CF. Has anyone actually seen a big reliable solid centre half who doubles as a full back ? If they do then they are not the type of centre half we are looking for i.e. they lack physical strength. Mr Butcher would you mind playing left back today? Mr Roberts would you mind playing right back (although he does pretty well in goal with a pair of white gloves on)? I don't think so - chase him.

We have had enough 'Jack of all trades - master of none' players. We now need players who know their position inside out.
