Sheep don't miss us.......but they can't stop talking about us??

Is this what sells the daily rhebel up north??....

By ANDREW SOUTHWICK

IN his column last week, David Preece ruffled a few feathers by admitting he misses Rangers being in the SPL.

I can’t say it’s a feeling I have had over the past 12 months but I do understand what he was saying.

When the Glasgow giants used to visit in the past, the atmosphere at Pittodrie did have an edge.

We all wanted a win a little bit more than we normally do on a Saturday, and few things are more satisfying than silencing the Gers’ vast away support with a good Pittodrie hiding.

There is a part of me that would love a trip to Ibrox on the fixture list. You tell me a ground where the Aberdeen fans celebrate a goal like we do when we take the lead in Govan?

Big players come alive in big games. Eoin Jess lived for those days, and some of his best memories in a red shirt were watching him tear Rangers apart.

Likewise, current Dons stars Niall McGinn, Jonny Hayes, Barry Robson and Willo Flood I’m sure would all love to sample an Aberdeen-Rangers clash.

But am I wishing them back into the SPL? Not even a little bit.

I’ll take my chances and hope we draw them in one of the cups. Aberdeen don’t miss Rangers. What we miss is success.

I haven’t heard too many Celtic fans complain about the lack of Old Firm games. Why would you miss Rangers when your ground is rocking with Barcelona and Juventus as your opponents?

Would Pittodrie punters be bothered if we never saw Ian Black and Lee McCulloch in the north-east again, if instead we had Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid to contend with regularly?

Europa League qualification next season has to be a priority. No disrespect to Motherwell, St Johnstone and Hibs who have all earned their spots but they’re where we should be. They should be the ones firing admiring glances our way.

Had we not been so conservative in the cups we could have had a few Hampden days out to satisfy the thirst for a big game domestically.

St Mirren defeated Celtic and Hearts to win the League Cup. Hibernian were able to give Falkirk a three-goal head start then win the Scottish Cup semi-final.

They were gifted those days out by an Aberdeen side that stayed in their shell in both quarter-final ties and couldn’t grasp the opportunity in front of them.

That winning mentality has to return to the club. The thirst for success, the feeling we should be on the big stage; it should be written into the contract of the Dons players.

This talk of reaching the top six, or of simply getting to a semi-final for a day out, is nonsense.

It’s that mentality that has us winning nothing for 18 years and missing a match against a Second Division side.

I don’t miss Rangers. I miss being better than them, and at the moment we should be. Let’s make season 2013/14 the year we prove we are.

I want some of his happy pills.

But at least he did check the European history of the Sheep for reference. The actually played Bayern 5 years ago, losing 7-3 on aggregate. And they played Atletico the year before, losing 2-0 (in a group with Panathinaikos (0-4), Lok Moscow (1-1), Atletico and Kopenhagen 4-0 Huzzah!)).

Of course, right now, the Sheep should try to actually make the top half of the SPL, rather than dreaming of a regular qualification bout in Europe.

Doesnt miss us but WANTS to draw us in the one of the cups. Am I missing something there? The guy is obviously a gluepot.

How old is this chap? If I recall, they havent won at Ibrox for 22 years and counting and Im guessing you could count on one hand how many times they have taken the lead in that time.

As it stands I hope we avoid them in the cups, unless our team improves on last season. They are the last set of 'fans' I would want to enter Ibrox although it would be nice to stuff them and I dont fancy giving them a pay day. Id rather draw the likes of Ross County and St Mirren in the cups next season.
