Ghuidi in the Liam re us playing on Friday nights

Recommended Posts

Actual title was: "Friday night football for Rangers as BT Sport target Ibrox giants for TV slot" but as usual it is misleading, turning a suggestion into a fact.

RANGERS could play a number of Second Division matches on Friday nights next term.

Itâ??s understood new broadcasters BT Sport will look to schedule some Gers games and SPL clashes in that slot to maximise their viewing figures.

BT Sport will take over from ESPN at the end of July and have bought the rights to 30 live SPL matches and 10 Gers games.

No other football in the UK is screened on a Friday and thatâ??s why the time slot is so appealing.

A number of SPL clashes â?? including the Highland derby â?? were played on a Friday night last term and it was hailed as a success by clubs and TV chiefs.

Police will need to be consulted over the choice of matches involving Rangers but the indications are they have no major concerns.

A few years ago the cops claimed they didnâ??t want any games played on a Friday night. But the fact Scotland played a World Cup

qualifier against Wales on a Friday back in March showed their stance has changed.

Gers will be under the same umbrella as the SPL clubs next season after SFL teams voted to join a new SPFL set-up at a Hampden meeting last week.

And SPL operations director Iain Blair said: â??Bearing in mind we have the new Scotland police force, the view is that Friday night is absolutely not off the agenda.

â??They will look at the risk assessment of each match and whatever else is going on in that locality on that particular evening. It is certainly possible you will see Rangers matches on a Friday evening.

â??Every game receives a rank and you get low, medium and high risk. Then you have high risk with even more risk expected. There is no chance that you get a high risk match on a Friday night.â?

Wonder how the viewing figures will compare. That is, will our 10 games match those 30 SPFL 1 (sic!) games.

NB: When did Sky drop the Friday evening Championship games?

Was going to mention that, they got good figures and the games still had big crowds. But they had the Sheff Wed v Leeds game which was troubled when that idiot ran on the pitch and slapped Chris Kirkland.

The odd Friday night game would be ok, I remember going to one in 1994 when we played Aberdeen at Ibrox. It was Coisty'd 300th goal for the club in a 1-0 win. It was a good night out but we had to take afternoon off school and other members on the supporters bus had to get the afternoon off work, so in that sense it isnt ideal.

More importantly, it will be good when we are in control or even negotitations regarding our fixtures and not have them decided for the benefit of the SPL.

friday and saturday night foootball even sunday night is a great idea.

When I was in Britain roundabout '98, studying at Keele University, there were Friday games, Sat midday, afternoon and evening games, Sunday afternoon double-headers and Monday footie as well. Paradise for any football enthusiast.

So where does this alleged imposition leave out good friends from across the water and other far traveled supporters, no thought for them whatsoever, if the club submits to this I will be picking my games and none away from Ibrox.
