Anti-sectarian football laws fear as fans complain

I believe that Andy's ironic take is pretty close to reality.

Although politicians are the visible face of government policy, they rarely act of their own free will.

They are usually pushed and prodded by pressure groups. Pressure can be applied in many ways - most often not particularly wholesome or necessarily in the interest of the general public.

26th's perspective above is probably close, but perhaps focuses on the politicians instead of who was pulling the strings.

By the way 26th, who was Rose meeting with at Glasgow University? That would be interesting.

The event was organised after an incident which saw Celtic’s self-styled “ultras”, the Green Brigade, clash with police amid claims that they had been unfairly “kettled”.

That would be at the unlawful protest/march they were holding. Is it surprising or sinister this fact is not mentioned ?

The legislation and it's enforcement are two seperate issues. The police are going completly over the top in the way they enforce the act, they have devoted a disporprtionate amount of resources catching people signing naughty songs. Fly tipping is a criminal offence, but you don't see them filming ebery white van thats travelling along a country road. There may well be another agenda here, the chief constable is keen to make clubs responsible for the cost of policing in the vincity of and not just inside grounds. It will be easier to acheive this,if they can portray football as a "problem" and how do you convince people that it is a problem - by plenty of arrests and a lot of publicity given to them. The police have their own game going on here.

The policing footprint is exactly the issue at play here.

It's all about raising funds.
