U20: Rangers 4-0 St Mirren

Written by Andrew Dickson

RANGERS made it eight wins in a row and 13 games unbeaten as they stretched their lead at the top of the SPFL Under-20 League to three points by beating St Mirren 4-0.

Darren Ramsay broke the deadlock to follow up his fine performance against Hibernian with another positive contribution in the first half.

Calum Gallagher’s first goal of 2014 then put Gers firmly in charge before Ramsay’s second – a lovely cushioned header – and Kyle McAusland’s late effort sealed the success.

This was the team’s third victory in as many games since the winter break and it was another good success for Gordon Durie’s team.

With second-placed Motherwell losing 3-0 to the Hibees earlier in the day, that meant the Light Blues were able to increase their advantage at the summit.

The Edinburgh outfit is now in the runners-up position ahead of Inverness on goal difference, with the Steelmen dropping down to fourth.

After the manner of last week’s 2-0 win over Hibs which took Gers above them into pole position in the table, it was no great surprise Durie’s side was unchanged.

That meant Gallagher led the line again in a 4-5-1 formation, with Jamie Burrows and Ramsay providing support from the flanks.

Gallagher was involved in the first talking point just a few minutes into the match, which saw away keeper Chris Dilo escape an early red card.

He was probably fortunate to do so as Robbie Crawford lifted a ball over the defence for forward Gallagher to chase.

The attacker got there first ahead of a defender and with only Dilo to beat, the Saints number one took him out with a crude challenge.

A yellow card was his punishment but given Gallagher would probably have been in on an open goal had he got past, there was certainly an argument for a dismissal instead.

Charlie Telfer had a go from distance but blazed wide and Luca Gasparotto header over from a Ramsay free kick as the hosts pressed in the opening exchanges.

Against the run of play, however, the Buddies nearly took a surprise lead as a Craig Halkett clearance only went as far as striker Thomas Reilly.

He cut back inside on to his favoured right foot and bent a decent attempt towards goal which landed on top of the net rather than inside it.

That chance actually sparked a brief change of emphasis as the away team suddenly came into the game much more.

Reilly teed up ex-Ger Lewis Morgan and Scott Gallacher had to get two strong hands to it to tip wide before he took no chances and touched Adam Brown’s corner over too.

But just when it seemed St Mirren might be getting on top, Rangers burst up the park and scored for the second week running through Ramsay.

He did well to break the offside trap after good work by Gasparotto and cut in from the left but still had work to do.

With Burrows available at the back post, the midfielder decided to take on the chance himself and stroked a confident finish past Dilo to make it 1-0.

Rangers should have gone two ahead as play lurched towards half-time but Gallagher came up with a miss he’ll still be annoyed about now instead.

Andy Murdoch did ever so well to win a couple of unlikely challenges and burst into the area before slipping wide to Ramsay.

He then drilled across the face of goal and found Gallagher but his studs got caught in the ground so instead of tapping into an open goal he stopped the ball on the line.

Despite trying to react first, he couldn’t free himself in time to slot home and relieved Saints cleared the danger.

The home team nearly paid that just prior to the break as Brown sent an attempt on the turn past goalie Gallacher but thankfully past the upright as well.

There was one last opportunity ahead of the interval and it came the Light Blues’ way, with McAusland rampaging into the box to win a corner and Halkett heading it over.

Dylan Dykes replaced Burrows and the second half began with the midfielder very nearly getting on the end of Gallagher’s cut back.

The attacker showed excellent upper body strength to hold off his marker and his pass was heading straight for his team-mate until a last-gasp interception took it away.

It was only a matter of time though before Rangers got a second and it came with 50 minutes on the clock.

Gallagher was the scorer after doing really well initially to shield the ball so that Crawford could take control of a loose clearance.

The first-team squad member displayed great footwork to take a couple of players out and he then found Gallagher who was waiting to stroke a composed, passed finish in from 15 yards.

Getting a two-goal gap did as much for Gers as it knocked the stuffing out of the Paisley visitors and it wasn’t long before Ramsay made it three.

A good period of sustained pressure saw Durie’s youngsters pass their opponents off the park before Crawford’s pinpoint delivery picked out the opening scorer.

Having broken free of his man, he had all the time in the world to nod a well-placed header beyond Dilo to make it 3-0.

There was to be one final goal and it was a popular one which came about as a result of the team’s final substitution, with Greg Pascazio replacing Halkett.

With both Gallagher and Burrows off, McAusland moved up front and instantly found the net with the ex-striker rolling in a smart finish to round off another good night for the team.

RANGERS: Gallacher; McAusland, Halkett (Pascazio 86), Gasparotto, Sinnamon; Burrows (Dykes 46), Crawford, Murdoch, Telfer, Ramsay; Gallagher (Gibson 76).
