Bearman 9 Posted March 31, 2015 Share Posted March 31, 2015 Payment must be made by Rangers owing to clause in the deal struck by Mike Ashley that took five Newcastle players to Ibrox Rangers will have to pay half a million pounds to Newcastle United if they are promoted to the Scottish Premier League because of a clause in the deal that saw five players move to Ibrox on loan from the English club. The deal was struck by Derek Llambias, the former managing director of Newcastle, who was appointed to the Rangers board by Mike Ashley last year. Llambias has since been removed from power following a boardroom counter-attack from a rival consortium, led by South-African-based businessman Dave King earlier this month. However, there is nothing the new regime can do to avoid making the payment other than remain in the First Division for another year. Darthter 542 Posted April 1, 2015 Share Posted April 1, 2015 I can understand paying a fee if the players actually help get promotion. So far this is only looking likely with Vuckic. One of the loanees has admitted that he can't play under ANY circumstances, and the other 3 are either injured or recovering from injury. MARK Jensen's warning comes after yesterday's revelation's that cash-strapped Rangers must fork out £500,000 to Ashley's Newcastle for the 'Toon Five' if they are promoted to the top flight in the summer. A LEADING Newcastle fan has warned Rangers supporters will always be close to Water Works so long as Mike Ashley plays Monopoly with the club. The Light Blues legions are up in arms after it was revealed they must fork out £500,000 to the Premiership outfit if they are promoted to the top flight in the summer. The staggering bounty for the loan of five players, four of whom are unlikely to kick a ball before the end of the season, has been laid out in the company’s interim results. Rangers are already picking up £5000-a-week plus accommodation costs for Haris Vuckic, Kevin Mbabu, Remie Streete, Shane Ferguson and Gael Bigirimana – and their apartments are more Park Lane than Old Kent Road. Only Vuckic has impressed since moving in January – Streete limped off in the first half of his debut, Mbabu has failed to make a breakthrough, Ferguson has a long-term injury and Bigirimana was diagnosed with a serious medical issue before he even moved to Ibrox. Rangers announced losses of £2.6million in the six months to December 31 and the £500,000 bonus to Newcastle was agreed by Ibrox chief executive Derek Llambias, who held a similar post at the Magpies and is a close ally of their owner Ashley. Ashley also owns almost nine per cent of Rangers and the deal has infuriated Ibrox fans and the new board under interim chairman Paul Murray, who recently revealed all five players were signed without medicals. A statement to the stock exchange read: “During the January 2015 transfer window, the club loaned five players from Newcastle United. “As part of those contracts, should the club gain promotion in season 2014-15, either directly or via the play-off method, the club will be liable to pay a total of £500,000 to Newcastle United.” Mark Jensen, editor of online fanzine themag.co.uk, has sympathy for Rangers and their fans but insists little will change as long as billionaire Ashley is involved with both clubs and living it up on Mayfair. He said: “It’s embarrassing the way Ashley conducts his business, especially with football clubs that are so important to so many people. “This latest revelation is a bit of a joke – let’s face it, £500,000 to a man like Ashley is nothing, it’s all a big game of Monopoly to him. “It seems at times like Newcastle and Rangers fans are like little pawns in his game, trying to get round the board and not land on any hotels. “For a club in their position at this time, £500,000 is a massive amount of money to Rangers and yet it was probably a decision taken on the spur of the moment by Ashley and his associates. “The fact only one player, Vuckic, could play a handful of games and yet it could still equate to £500,000 will not come as a surprise to Newcastle fans. “The prize money for finishing second in the Championship this season is only £342,000 and yet Rangers will have to pay more to one club if they go up. “It doesn’t make sense – it’s not as if they are loaning a player to take a club from the English Championship into the Premier League, when there are tens of millions at stake. “Newcastle fans have had almost eight years to become embarrassed at the way Ashley does everything. “Rangers fans have had little more than eight months and they are beginning to realise what it’s all about. “He has a duel interest in both clubs and should be looking to be whiter than white, so this is laughable. But why should he care what Newcastle or Rangers fans think? “After all, Ashley has upset the City of London and big businesses. He’s only interested in making money out of both clubs. If Newcastle won the FA Cup he wouldn’t be bothered. Success and glory don’t mean much to him. “Does he want Sports Direct to be named best employer of the year? Or would he rather have 15,000 staff, most of whom are on zero-hour contracts? “Football clubs mean so much to so many communities but people such as Ashley and those who work for him have no emotional input. Do they really care? We all know the answer to that.” Llambias and Newcastle United both failed to return calls from Record Sport yesterday, while Rangers declined to add to the Stock Exchange statement issued on their behalf by Murray. Ashley has already fallen foul of the SFA this season when he was fined £7500 for breaching their duel interest rules and Jensen reckons the football authorities on both sides of the border should launch a probe into the controversial loan deals between St James’ Park and Ibrox. He said: “We’ve never seen Mbabu play and assume he’ll never turn out for the Newcastle first team. Streete too. “It’s a shame Ferguson is injured. Although he, Bigirimana and Vuckic are not good enough for the Premier League, they should be good enough for the Championship and top flight in Scotland. “Those three players should have been big assets to Rangers – then we found Bigirimana should never have been playing and Ferguson is knackered. You really have to look at who made the decision to sign them for Rangers without medicals. “Surely, the new Rangers board must be looking at what they can do to make individuals accountable and there should certainly be a condition attached to loan arrangements between clubs that medicals are completed. “When individuals are involved in two clubs there should be a commitment from the authorities to ensure everything is above board. “They have such strict governance in German football around club ownership, for example, but in England the rules certainly appear to come from the Wild West. “Here, they talk about fit and proper people but for the most part it’s just lip service. “We’ve had a long time at Newcastle to understand how Ashley works. This 'contract' has already been made null and void with the non-appearance of the players, lack of medicals and known illnesses. If need be we'll take this to court and win our case. I'm not so sure. Non-appearance is due to the lack of medicals and known illnesses..... and the responsibility to ensure those are not factors would be on Rangers, not Newcastle. So how can you make a contract null and void on something that WE didn't do due diligence on ? We might have a case for gross negligence with whomever approved the contract without medicals, but I have severe doubts that the contract between Rangers and Newcastle could be negated. Regardless of the known affiliations between Ashley and Llambias this was a deal which was agreed upon by the two clubs.
