ian1964 10,444 Posted June 21, 2015 Share Posted June 21, 2015 THE recruitment of Mark Warburton as Rangers’ new manager was handled by directors Paul Murray and John Gilligan and not chairman Dave King, it has emerged. Warburton has admitted he is yet to meet King, the South African-based Scot who won control of the club in March. The 52-year-old former Brentford manager was interviewed by Murray and Gilligan before his appointment as Stuart McCall’s successor. Gilligan said: “In this instance Paul and I were charged with the task of going and recruiting the manager and then reporting back to the board and explaining why we thought the choice was right and then the board then gave their opinion. Dave, contrary to what a lot of people might think, was quite comfortable with that. He delegated that job and that’s the way a board should operate. We recommended and then the board took the recommendation and decided yes. “This is how I worked at Tennent’s when I was MD of a £150 million business. People come with recommendations, you have a board meeting and OK it. That’s exactly what happens.” Warburton said of King: “We haven’t met as yet. I am sure he’s a very busy man and he’s chairman of the football club, so whenever the schedule allows I look forward to that [meeting him].” Rangers, meanwhile, were yesterday linked with a move for central midfielder John Eustace who played for Derby County last season but is now a free agent. Eustace, 35, had a spell on loan at Dundee United in season 1998-99 while at Coventry City. Previous owner Sir David Murray loved a big-name signing, especially if it helped boost the sale of Ibrox season tickets. But that was then, this is now and the economics of the former Light Blues chairman belong to a far off era, as his namesake emphasised. Current director Paul Murray outlined the philosophy that will rule on signing the new players manager Mark Warburton desperately needs. “I don’t think the idea of making a marquee signing just for the sake of it is always a good idea,” said Murray. “But if a player becomes available that the manager thinks can add some value to the club, we will obviously look at it. “We’re not going to sign Ronaldo or Messi any time soon, but there are obviously a good number of players that have been offered to us and we’re having initial discussions with some of them. “Certain positions will be priorities and we need to deal with them quickly. There are many detractors trying to throw a spanner in the works. Phil can't decide on his name is saying King had a meeting with Ashely to sell his shares to him because he can't finance the club. The media are clutching at straws trying to get any type of story as the club is conducting itself in a professional manner. He is a (as in ONE) major shareholder, probably the richest of the lot. He sure has a great say in the direction we are taking. But he remains just a (as in ONE) director of the club.
