Big guy up front...

Recommended Posts

I'm with you on that one mate,we are creating more chances in every game than I can remember,if we were to take all these chances created we would be passed the 100 already, why do we need a big target man?,like the last few seasons!........................

That would be the fear right there. Look at the last 3 years.... we have had a target man and ended up lumping the ball up to him in hope more than with a strategy in mind.

Without a target man you force yourself into playing the ball on the deck - which is exactly what we need anyway as we have players who want it on the ground into feet. Our movement and passing is excellent right now, so why change the philosophy ?

Also, I actually think that Waghorn can get his head on crosses too, and Miller has had his share of headed goals in previous seasons. The difference this season is that, for the most part, we are tearing teams apart through the middle, hence no need to get it out wide and whip in a cross. Just look at Tavernier - he gets outside and behind his defender often - but once he does there isn't the same need to play the ball through the air as he has so much movement from his strikers that he has plenty of options on the ground.

Im probably in the minority here but i dont rate Waghorn as our out and out striker. Theres an element about him that reminds me of sebo, though he is a far better player. Hes showed much more promise out on the right and should be played there. What we really need is a michael mols type of player. Now that would be sweet!

I think most would agree. When sides play a dynamic, fluid 4-3-3, the main striker isn't vitally important as long as the side is getting goals though, which we are. We can score goals all over the park - Tavernier, Holt, Halliday etc all look like they will chip in with plenty goals. We will need a few decent additions next season definitely, and I imagine that will include a natural goalscorer.

Waghorn may not win a huge amount of balls in the air but he is a target man who can take the ball in under pressure and link the play.

Despite our superb start to the season I do think we need another striker as back-up but the manager's point about having a lean, hungry squad is valid.
