Georgia v Scotland and Scotland v Germany

Recommended Posts

Bad result and bad timing. Just means we have to beat Germany which couldn't be a more tricky task.

It will be another glorious failure although it was a slightly tricky group.

Good on Northern Ireland and Wales though, I will be hoping they both win their next game on Monday to qualify.

This was a perfect example of Scottish manager tactics in not setting out to dominate but keep it tight at the back and hope for a goal. Only in the second half did we actually try to get a grip of the game. We really need a more adventurous manager. A Warburton look-alike.

Not quite as bad as the 4-6-0 but heading that way.

Point 2) Scott Brown is a Fanny and caused the goal by his pedestrian marking. If he is Scotland's best then we should not be near a top tournament.

How many managers ago has it been since we have had a decent team? Who has hired most of them?

Where, and with whom, do you figure we should look to for the reason for Scotland's glorious failures, assuming you figure we have decent player personnel?

Not really sure what you are getting at but if you hold the reigns of a horse to let it gallop then it will gallop. If you hold them taut then then it will hold back and a donkey will pass it. That is what happened.

Is that what has been happening all these years?

We are just not good enough. Poor collection of players, and a poor manager. However, I still think, as Warburton has shown, a decent manager could get something out of that squad. We should be trying something different, not the same old stuff. Georgia played 3-5-2 last night, with 3 really attacking and pressing. Their back three would suggest there was space on the flanks, but we maintained the same formation. We set up one way; the oppositions system doesn't factor in, which is so out-of-date.

We could have played a 3-5-2, because we have a decent enough WBs in Hutton (not great defensively but quite good going forward), Robertson, or Anya; decent couple of forwards in Fletcher and Martin; Maloney or Adam are decent enough to play in the hole; and we've got decent, high-energy CMs. I actually think we've got decent enough players, but they are not being used properly.

Strachan said before the game 'it wasn't a must win' he was wrong about that, and it doesn't actually help to gee up the squad by coming out with a pre-match comment like that, does it?

I've looked at the upcoming games that are left, and worked it out if results go the way they should then Scotland won't qualify even if the beat Poland at Hampden even if the final game between Poland and RoI finishes all square we lose out by a point.

We need at least a draw on Monday to have any chance, a defeat will mean Scotland won't be going anywhere next summer.

Strachan conceded that the attacking performance was not sharp enough to win the match but felt that leaving Tbilisi without a point was hard on his team.

"We didn't do enough to win the game,” he said. “We definitely didn't do that much wrong to lose the game."

Does that sound to you like a guy who wants to let loose his charges?

Here's how other people rated his players -

Now, maybe if he used new players who are more in-form : e.g. Wilson ( Russell Martin ), Wallace ( Mulgrew ), Halliday ( Brown ) and McKay (Forrest ) - he could really adopt a policy of letting loose his charges.

Maybe he should ask Mark Warburton how that works.

Of course, to actually pick new players he might need to have a less-constricted view of the player's abilities playing at the Scottish Championship level.

As a guide here is his part of his present player selection, and how one team - the majority of whom have not done well in CL qualifying games level - have a greater degree of preponderance in the present Scotland squad;

Marshall - Ex-Celtic player

Robertson - ex-Celtic youth

Mulgrew - Celtic

Brown - Celtic

Maloney - Ex-Celtic player

Forrest - Celtic

Griffiths - Celtic

Strachan- Ex-Celtic manager

McGhee - Ex- celtic player
