The word h*n is not offensive

Recommended Posts

Hey, WTF is this with f.e.n.i.a.n. Being blocked out but h.u.n. Is not? On our own site? Sort this out please admin.

As Pete says.... It is unlikely anyone on here will run to the force citing the OBA for being called a Hun by a fellow Bear. Not only that but we are unlikely to call each other Huns in a derogatory sense to supporters of the same Club as ourselves. But we all know the other lot look for mock offense at every opportunity and now have a ludicrous piece of legislation to hurt Rangers fans with if the F word is used.

Common sense was applied

Should be viewed in context though. E.g., I do miss any reference to the word f*enian in the article, whether it is deemed acceptable or not. And it is quite bizarre how someone can deem h*un as being non-offensive, as it is clearly used in the same Northern Irish context as the F-word when hurled at us. And even more bizarrly, the F-word is being thrown about as a reason for anti-Irish sentiment (not anti-Catholic, which would at least have a basis) and thus deemed racist. When there is no such thing as an Irish race, nor any "anti-Irish" sentiment in our singing. Purely made up stuff by the always offended and neatly tugged into the new, West of Scotland definition of sectarianism.

Wonder if - when I meet someone in Scotland while wearing a Rangers scarf and talking German - someone calls me a H*un and I go to the police and make a complaint, this will be deemed as acceptable or racist ...

Thanks for the replies Pete, Craig.I get where you are coming from, but I believe you are wrong in this case. I respect the site admin's decisions on difficult issues, and nobody wants to get wrapped up in legal issues, but the whole point of my post in this thread is to point out that the treatment of h.u.n. and f.en.ian in law is exactly the same. To then have a Rangers site that bans one term and not the other (which is the more offensive of the two) is doing ourselves an injustice.

If you had banned both words, I would have understood. I do think this site is fantastic for its adult treatment of people to make good choices and be informed enough to know what the correct usage would be and what would get them into trouble. It is therefore a shame we have double standards on such an emotive issue.

I wasn't saying it was right or wrong or that it wouldn't be changed, that is Frankie's decision I was just stating how it probably came about. It was probably a case of nobody thinking about it. Sometimes you don't see a problem until it it surfaces.

I do have some sympathy for TB's view and I'm not convinced the F and T words are thrown around indiscriminately on the site. However it's not my door that will be knocked on, so it's easy for me to say that and respect admin's decision.

The H word is a little more difficult as it gets used in other words:

I'll have some chunky chicken as I'm feeling hungry

becomes:

I'll have some c***ky chicken as I'm feeling ***gry

I think in the past we censored fenian mainly because of the initial issues with UEFA and it stuck because of the Offensive Behaviour Act.

In a general sense, I'm very comfortable that our members would use the term constructively but have always erred on the side of caution for their and our protection. Hun wasn't censored as the likelihood of its use was a fair bit lower on here and, clearly, it's only in recent years that it has started to receive the same attention (though not yet to the same degree).

Happy to remove the censoring but we will remove offensive posts.

Thanks Frankie. Absolutely bang on that any misuse of the word should lead to censorship of those posts and possible the posters. We all should know what is and isn't allowed by now, and what context is legally acceptable and what is not.

If I want to say that I hope we send the fenians home early and unhappy from our semi-final, then I cannot under any circumstances be charged for that. I dont particularly like the word or use it very often and I dont deem it particularly offensive as they call themselves it, but when online generally just use tims or them.

You're welcome but with the greatest of respect, I don't want the word used in that way to avoid any confusion.
