There was next to nothing they could have done to prevent that (at risk of their own safety). Protecting the dug out and officials was most likely the main job there before mounted police et al arrived. Whether that happened quickly enough is anyone's guess. In theory, it all looks rather simple. We can demand for the safety of the players and officials all day long, blame the police or the SFA and whatnot. The reality is that if such a mob moves forward, you'd need a considerable amount of police-force to thwart them. The only way to deal with this is to impress on them that no one gives the proverbial flying how long you waited for a cup win this behaviour even if no assaults were carried out is still unacceptable and dangerous. Would UEFA brush it off as "exubrance" if this happened in a Euro match? Opposing fans goaded and threatened with cut throat gestures while their players are assaulted and spat on?
