Warbs: We Have Our Targets

Recommended Posts

MARK WARBURTON says he is still keen to add another forward and defender to his Gers squad for the new season.

The Gers have added nine players to the squad already this summer and the gaffer says that he and Frank McParland are still working hard to further improve the group he has for the season.

Speaking to RangersTV today, he said: “We have a number of targets, none of which are on Twitter and none of which have been released.

“We would like another striking option and another defensive option in an ideal world but they have to be players who add value on and off the pitch and that’s really strong.

“This will only happen if the players we want are available, we are working on it but it’s a decreasing talent pool – Frank McParland and his team are working tirelessly.”

The Gers have added Matt Gilks, Lee Hodson, Clint Hill, Jordan Rossiter, Joey Barton, Matt Crooks, Josh Windass, Joe Dodoo and Kranjcar to the ranks this season already, with five players leaving from the 2015/16 campaign.

Warburton has been pleased with his additions this season and is determined that the club continues to work diligently in the background to secure future targets.

He continued: “It is about us doing our work and going about our business quietly and under the radar because if we get embroiled in a bidding war we will lose.

“The players who have come in have mixed in really well with the existing group, which is why I am so strong on character.

“If we can get them then great and if we can’t then we won’t panic.”

Suppose that rules out RVP!

I don't think we will see any more signings!,I think we will go with what we have then look at it again come January, having said that we might still see a loanee maybe two!

This. We're still not paying proper fees: how many freebies are there of the requisite age and ability, in the correct position, that aren't being offered higher wages in more lucrative leagues? Maybe a centre back will come in on loan but that'll probably be that. I do hope the RVP nonsense isn't going to make this all an anticlimax.

Ibrox boss Mark Warburton unlikely to add to Rangers squad before Premiership opener

Mark Warburton admits he is unlikely to bolster his Rangers squad again before the start of the new Premiership campaign.

The Light Blues boss has signed nine players ahead of the big kick-off as he sets his sights on the league title this term.

He remains in the market for another defender and a forward to complete his squad but is happy to bide his time to wait for the right deals.

Warburton said: “I don’t think we’ll get the players we’re looking for before the start of the league season.

“At this stage it’s not about quantity but more about quality.

“If we can find a striking option with the calibre of attributes we don’t currently possess then great, we’ll move. But we have high quality all over the park in every single position.

“People keep asking me what’s my best 11. It’s not about 11. It’s a squad game now.

“We could be look be looking for a 6ft 4in centre half to add to the aerial presence but we’ve got Matt Crooks to come back and he could be an option there.

“But yes, if the right player becomes available then we’ll move.

“Don’t forget about the loan market, that’s only beginning to pick up.

“If things go well then that usually kicks in at the end of July, beginning of August.

“If you remember that was the time we picked Dom Ball and Gedion (Zelalem) up in.

“If we can move quickly then great but we’re not going to act just for the sake of it.”

It has been a productive summer for Warburton as he has added strength and depth to his squad ahead of Rangers’ Premiership return.

A number of Ibrox stars have also committed their futures to the club by signing new deals with the Light Blues.

Warburton said: “There are discussions about contracts all the time. The media picked up on Waghorn and Tavernier for some unknown reason. When it’s suitable to do so we will move on things.

“We had Kenny Miller, Andy Halliday, Jason Holt, Barrie McKay all in last season and as boys do well you have to move as a club to protect ourselves as well.”

After four wins in the Betfred Cup, Rangers will round off their summer schedule when they face Burnley at Ibrox tomorrow.

And Warburton can sense the excitement in our game as the Gers get set to take to the top flight once again.

He said: “You can’t stop. You hear people saying it’s great to have Rangers back and that’s it. No. You’ve got to go hard again and keep improving it.

“We have shown that young players can come here and be challenged. There is an ignorance about the Scottish game. But somehow we have to improve the income.”

I think the manager and McParland deserve some credit for our transfer activity so far but, for me anyway, a dominant, organising centre half and another striker were always the priority this summer. Yes, Hill, Crooks and Dodoo arguably can fill these berths but only time will tell if they're the players we needed. I'm not so sure but we'll see soon enough...

I think there's no coincidence a genuine quality centre-half and striker would cost the most money.

As such it arguably makes sense for these players to be loan deals to allow others to absorb the cost. When the EPL squads are known there will be good options out there.
