justice.

Kraig Mackay needed seven stitches in his head and mum Laura hoped DNA evidence from missile would nail yob responsible but the trail has run cold.

A mum has voiced her despair that the thug who bottled her 12-year-old son as he attended a football match has escaped justice.

Laura Mackay had hoped DNA from the missile thrown at her boy would lead to an arrest – but tests have proved negative.Rangers fan Kraig needed seven stitches after being attacked as he walked to Hampden to watch his heroes take on Celtic last October.

Police investigating the assault contacted Laura on Sunday to tell her the trail of evidence had run cold.Laura said yesterday: “They will not be looking into it any further.“They sent the bottle away for analysis and it came back with some DNA on it.“They then sent it away to be enhanced but there was not enough for anything to be put through the system.“The case won’t be completely shut. It will still be live in case anyone wants to give information, which I highly doubt now.“More or less, that’s it.”

Laura said the DNA sample, recovered from a bottle of Budweiser, was the last credible lead police had.

The mum-of-two added: “We put out so many appeals when it happened and even Kraig urged someone to come forward.“Nobody ever did so the DNA was the only hope we had left.“The police have been absolutely fantastic through the full thing.”

Detectives studied CCTV and a 10 second Snapchat clip featuring Celtic fans on the opposite side of Aitkenhead Road a minute before the bottle was launched.

Photographs on social media were also examined and door-to-door inquiries were carried out in the area but no one was identified.

Kraig, from Dennistoun, Glasgow, was going to the game with his uncle and aunt on the Rutherglen 20 Club supporters bus.

But the bus broke down on Curtis Avenue, close to Hampden Park, and the fans had to walk the rest of the way.

The bottle was thrown at about 2pm – 15 minutes before the Betfred League Cup semi-final kicked off – on October 23 last year.

Laura, 31, added: “It is as if the person has just came out the pub.“It’s more or less been a full bottle so there has not been long for DNA to be on it. Kraig did say that when it hit him he just got soaked.”

The schoolboy, who was 11 at the time of the attack, was treated at the scene and then taken to the Queen Elizabeth University hospital in an ambulance.

He required seven stitches for a deep gash to his head.

After the game, which Celtic won 1-0, Chief Superintendent Brian McInulty said: “While the majority of genuine football fans behaved well, from a crowd of 50,697, there were 18 arrests for minor public disorder.

“The incident involving the assault of the 11-year-old boy as he was walking to the game is completely unacceptable.”

Following media coverage of the incident, Rangers named Kraig the official mascot for the club’s league clash with St Johnstone.

Laura issued a fresh appeal for the culprit to hand himself inShe said: “Come forward, put your hands up and show you have made a mistake.“Take your punishment.

“My wee boy has been punished for going to a game and is now scarred for life.”

A police spokeswoman said: “To date, a number of inquiries have been carried out in relation to this incident, however, no one has been arrested.”

This and the other wee boy who was bottled while sitting on a mini bus at the previous filth match by 'a person wearing green'. Same outcome. Police Scotland ought to be ashamed - too busy listening for people singing songs so they can bang them up.

Disgusted by this. Ashamed of what my country has fast become under the Nationalists. Not surprised but disgusted all the same.

While angry at the thug getting off with it because of nobody brave enough to dob him.her in it is indicative of thugs/hooligans getting away with things at football. In this I include the letting off of flares/smoke bombs which could result in serious burns, injury, breathing difficulty etc.

I personally if seeing this happen would have no hesitation of pointing out the perpetrators.
