RIP Davie Cooper 22years ago today

Recommended Posts

It brought back to mind that he was with Charlie Nicholas filming one of those shows when he collapsed. Apparently Nicholas initially thought he was joking around. The incident deeply affected Nicholas which is understandable.

Charlie Nicholas is one pundit I like, always talks sense. obviously Celtic thru and thru but doesnt have cheap digs like say Andy Walker. Its refreshing when the football rivalry can be put aside. You go back to Tommy Burns funeral which affected McCoist and Walter.

As for Cooper - Im probably 5 years too young to appreciate him. His penalty against Wales is one of my first football memories. That free kick in the Skol cup final is one of the biggest whoppers ever, it was a rocket. And to think balls were a lot heavier 30 years ago.

So you didn't hear him say he would be dead before Rangers won the title again ? :(

Before I had seen this thread my boss called me into his office and showed me Podolski's against England the other night (what a strike !!) and I said to him - search "Davie Cooper Aberdeen" - he watched it and turned to me and went "holy fuck, that was a rocket". He then pissed himself laughing when I told him how Leighton had told Cooper "I nearly got my hand to that" for Cooper to retort immediately "Aye, on its way back out".

What a player - incredible talent.

No didnt hear that one, oh well maybe take back the comment although he might have been tongue in cheek whereas Walker and Sutton are on a bandwagon weekly.

Completely agree that he is nowhere as bad as those two Gribz - but he would have to work very hard to be that bad !!

I don't wish death on anyone, BUT 30 December 1961- 01 May 2018 has a certain tang to it.:D

Got to say it was a toss up who was best between Baxter and Coops.

No. Sorry YB but that one simply doesn't stand at all.

As much as I liked Cooper, he was a fantastic player - when he could be ersed. Let's not re-write history here. There were times when quite correctly Davie was left sitting on the bench. There were other games when for whatever reason he was anonymous.

That did not happen with Baxter and that is the difference.

Cooper was good. Baxter was a few levels above him.

Its a good generation debate with Baxter and Cooper. For me Laudrup was the best. We had good wingers in Walters, Huistra and Mikhailichenko then Laudrup came and was on a different level. Could play left and right and should have been kept to play centre when Advocaat came.
