So, sounds like the problem area for the last 2 years now has multiple options if all reports are to be believed (I did say if)... We'll have Rossiter, Jack and Peña all available for that sitting midfielder role..... If nothing else, at least the problem position has been prioritised

Mexico international Carlos Peña says he is in negotiations with Rangers over a summer switch to Ibrox.

 

Mexican media are reporting that discussions between the 27-year-old midfielder and Rangers over a move from his current club Chivas Guadalahara are well underway.

Peña is known in his homeland as 'Gullit' for his similarity to the Dutch legend.

 

But is he about to Peña deal and become a central figure in Pedro Caixinha 's Rangers overhaul? If so what does he bring to the table? Record Sport Online looks at the Mexican's credentials.

 

Who is he?

 

Carlos Alberto Peña is a Mexican midfielder who has been capped 19 times by his country.

 

The 27-year-old has never played club football outside his country and has spent his entire career with Leon and and Guadalajara. He is currently in his second spell with Leon in the Mexican top tier, the Liga MX.

 

In his first spell with the club Peña netted 12 goals in 31 matches to help Leon win promotion via the play offs.

 

He moved to CD Guadalajara in December 2015 in a deal worth a reported $8million. However after a disappointing first year Pena returned on loan to Leon last December.

 

Nicknamed 'Gullit' for his apparent resemblance to the Dutch legend, Peña has made 19 appearances for his country since his international debut in 2012. He was in the Mexico squad at the 2014 World Cup and made one appearance as a substitute in the final group stage match against Croatia.

 

What has he got to offer?

 

Typically for a Central American the midfielder is comfortable on the ball but has shown at both his clubs he can chip in with his fair share of goals from midfield.

 

The 27-year-old is well known to Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha from the coach's time in Mexico as boss of Liga MX side Santos Laguna.

 

He's not the tallest at 5ft 8in but is credited for being strong and commanding in the centre of the park. Reports at the time of the 2014 World Cup said he was one of the most influential players in Mexico, good at breaking up opposition attacks and starting his own. He can also play on the left hand side.
