Rangers v Moscow D 1945

Recommended Posts

Great picture.

Soviet clubs play a prominent part in our history. It's hard to comprehend how important their tour of the UK was greeted at the end of WW2. Our result, against 12 men, showed how powerful we were at the time. Obviously they were our opposition in Barcelona decades later when we won the Cup Winners Cup.

I used to work with a guy who spoke about going to Glasgow Airport to welcome Rangers back from a tour of the Soviet Union in the early sixties. Apparently the support invaded the runway to welcome the side and then blocked the Paisley Road back into Glasgow.

12 men? What's the story there?

Here's a surprisingly good account of the match from the Herald - http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/14094342.Ibrox_1945__When_Rangers_tackled_the_might_of_Moscow_Dynamo/ The Russians hadn't quite figured out substitutions yet...

I get excited just reading about that match. It must have an incredible atmosphere.

The reds came out after half time with an extra player. Game went on for a few minutes before Waddell, I think it was, pointed it out to the ref who promptly equalised the numbers.

Torry Gillick was the man who counted their team and found 12 on the park Scott.

First three guys on the gantry wearing their army uniform, with a smattering of others dotted within the crowd.

Football was taking off again after the war. When my gran died we found several old football programmes in her house obviously bought by my grandad or my uncles.

I got the Rangers v Moscow Dynamo, Rangers v Celtic Victory Cup Semi replay, Rangers v Hibs Victory Cup Final, and the Scotland v England Victory International game.
