Brendan Rodgers has pleaded with officials to give his players more protection - as he fears one of his stars could suffer a career-ending injury.

The Celtic boss voiced his concerns after Kieran Tierney was on the end of a shocking challenge from Motherwell’s Ryan Bowman last weekend - following a horror tackle from Iain Vigurs on Scott Sinclair in the Inverness game the previous week.

Bowman and Vigurs both escaped red cards and Rodgers insisted referees need to clamp down on the dangerous tackles before players suffer serious injury.

Rodgers is sickened by over-the-top challenges

Motherwell defender Ryan Bowman's shock tackle on Celtic star Kieran Tierney is a sending off all day long - Richmond

The Hoops pointed to Parkhead coach John Kennedy - who saw his career wrecked by a brutal lunge by Romanian Ionel Ganea when on Scotland duty.

Rodgers - who was also forced to retire in his twenties due to injury - said: “My only worry at this moment in time is the protection I want for my players.

“I didn’t see the tackle on Kieran Tierney until after the game but when I did see it, it was a horrendous challenge. “And we had one the week before on Scott Sinclair that was a horrendous challenge.

“I have a team of men. They are young players but I ask them to be men in the game and I think we have shown over the course of the season we can handle a tough, aggressive, tight game of football, we can take that.

John Kennedy suffered a horror challenge from Romania's Ioan Ganea

“But I need the officials to control if something is a bad tackle, they have got to see it.

“I have a brilliant young coach on my books called John Kennedy who lost his career on the back of an absolutely disgraceful challenge and I don’t want that.

“That could have happened to Kieran Tierney last week if his foot was planted – easily.

“It is the responsibility of officials to protect players – that is their duty on the field.

“Not just the referee – all four of them – and how that was never seen, you know.

“The same with Scott Sinclair the other week. They are awful challenges. That is my only worry at the minute. I worry for the players.

“We play an aggressive game and we have lots of games like that that are great – away at Aberdeen, tough games where you fight and tackle and are aggressive.

“But when it goes over the top we need the help of the referees otherwise you are going to lose talented players and you may lose careers because of it.”

Rodgers admitted his side may be getting targeted for rough treatment because they are so far out in front in Scotland.

But he insisted it was no excuse for putting players in harm’s way.

Rodgers said: “I don’t know what it is. I know a player like Sinclair is quick and dynamic and that can affect timing.

“But a bad challenge is a bad challenge. I don’t care who it is.

“We respect for how opponents prepare for games. My duty is to make sure my team is prepared to fight and represent supporters.

“But there is also a duty from others to make sure the laws of the game and the welfare of players is looked after.

“I’m not saying to go soft. In Scotland and England we see two teams competing and fighting for the result.

“But we have seen some naughty challenges.

“I’m talking primarily about my players but if it’s happening elsewhere then it’s an issue.”

Rodgers insisted he doesn’t want players to dig up the officials on the pitch - but he does want them to take action.

He said: “I ask my players to respect referees. We are not a team that goes charging after official, moaning and groaning.

“We say this is a man’s game. You expect to get hit with challengers, you take it, you get up and you fight.

“I’ve just seen a couple of things lately, whether it’s because we are on a run and are a target for teams, that means we need to be careful.”

Brenda's calls certainly worked for them...

I'm not sure I said that, to be fair...

Motherwell deserved to win because they took their chances having drawn us into a battle on their terms. We had no answer.

I can though say that refereeing performances this season have been consistent in the way that overly physical play has gone unpunished. I'm not arguing that teams are not within their rights to play however they feel is best to get a result, but I am arguing that officials should be applying the laws of the game consistently. We should be pressuring them to do so, via whatever means available to us.

Forgive me if I've misunderstood what you are saying but by your own argument they are being consistent in that they are not applying the laws/rules.

To some extent, yes. The number of occasions where blatant foul play, often dangerous, is ignored or not dealt with has been shocking this season.

On that I agree.

I just have an issue that we “didn’t deserve to win”.

The whole refereeing debacle this season has meant that we “didn’t deserve to win” most games but that is because we are fighting with one hand tied behind our back.

A few years ago Celtic pushed back so hard it led to referees threatening to go on strike. People sneered at them and their paranoia but the authorities ended up capitulating and Celtic emerged with one hand on the throat of the SFA. It was deliberate and calculated ... and it worked.

In contrast, Rangers has adopted the role of victim and appears ever weaker because of it. There now seems to be a subliminal attitude among our referees that they must routinely demonstrate "neutrality" by actively disadvantaging Rangers. We urgently need to apply pressure on referees ourselves and silence won't do it. This calls for loud and very public complaint .. and bugger the sneers that come because of it.

In principle I agree with you but we cant then say that it is inconsistent because ultimately it is consistently poor refereeing.

To qualify that it is also necessary to point out that Moult also received a head knock that had drawn blood in yesterdays game. It could be argued that it wasn't as severe as that of Cardoso but the game should have been stopped regardless because it was a) A head injury and b) A blood injury. The referee in that particular case was approached by Moult with blood running down his face and yet seemed even at that to take very little notice. He more or less looked right through the player. In this case the level of incompetence could have endangered the players. Cardoso in my opinion was far more seriously injured than Moult but both were serious because at no point can we judge a player with an open wound to not be severely injured. In this respect the referee was consistent.

I get what you mean now...

To put it another way, the referee didn't fail to the various chances that we missed, nor did he fail to clear the corner that led to their first goal, nor did he lose the ball in midfield or fail to track Moult's run that led to their second. On the basis that they took their chances, they deserved to win.

Yes that was utterly baffling. And you know its bad when you agree with Chris Sutton!

The performance of the referee can be separated from the performance of the players. We know we need to improve the squad and that is the subject of lots of other threads.

If the referee does his job properly then Motherwell don’t win that game because they would have had at least 2 players sent off before they scored and 2 after (to accompany Alves in the early bath). It was a scandalous performance by the referee. It’s not ‘manly’ or ‘brave’ to elbow people in the face or go over the top in tackles, punch them on the back of the head or scyth down from behind. It’s cowardly in th extreme and it’s not the job of Rangers players to ‘man up’ and do the same to our opponents and get themselves a red card. Their job is to play football with strength and speed within the rules and spirit of the game. It is the job of the referees to stop the level of dangerous play in our game and they are failing abysmally. Right now every team can see that the referees will not apply the rules which is why the talentless thugs are deploying these tactics and it does no good for our game or the well-being of our players.

There were offences committed yesterday which would not be tolerated in rugby league which incidentally is more of a mans game than football. The SFA are presiding over yet another farce in our game.

I can accept being beaten by better teams in case folk think this is sour grapes and for the last 20 mins Motherwell were the better team but I can’t accept the level of incompetence being shown by the football authorities. If Scottish refs cant do the job properly then we really should be looking abroad at bringing in good referees. Footballers can play in different countries so why can’t we have foreign refs? Given the amount of money fans of Rangers put into the game we surely deserve half decent referees? It’s truly scandalous the level we are at and does nothing to improve our game. The officiating keeps our football at the level of former Blackpool and Hartlepool hammer throwers. We need young talent in our game. If I had a talented kid the last thing I’d do is expose him to Scottish football. Perhaps this is one occasion where Rangers can officially echo Rodgers words and call out the SFA.

Did the Moult incident happen before or after Cardoso?
