Dean Shiels subjected to abuse by Falkirk fans throwing fake eyes

DUNFERMLINE midfielder Dean Shiels was the target of abuse with fake eyes thrown onto the pitch by a section of the Falkirk support.

 

The former Rangers playmaker helped the Pars to a 2-0 win against the Bairns earlier today but was picked out by some of the away support.

 

It’s not the first time there has been controversy between the sides with the last meeting seeing Falkirk pair Joe McKee and Kevin O’Hara charged by the SFA for mocking the Northern Irish man over his missing eye.

 

The pair were accused of making malicious comments about the fact that Shiels had an operation in 2006 to remove his right eye following an accident when he was eight.

 

The incident wasn’t witnessed by ref Steven McLean but was reported by officials after the game.

I am struggling to understand how this is less of a despicable act than throwing bananas or monkey chants etc? One is racist and one is a direct vocal and illustrated attack on a disability by a group of individuals.

Those people who have done this can be identified via cc tv etc and also by members of the public.

Note to the Scot Squad.....Do your job!

CLUB STATEMENT

 

Falkirk FC apologises unreservedly to Dean Shiels and Dunfermline Athletic FC for the abhorrent behaviour of a small number of individuals at this afternoon’s Ladbrokes Championship match.

 

The club wholeheartedly condemns the abuse witnessed towards Dean Shiels in the strongest terms and will be working closely with Dunfermline Athletic FC to identify those responsible.

 

Abuse towards anyone with a disability is simply unacceptable and the fact this took place within a sporting context with rivalries at play is no excuse. This needs to stop now.

 

Disability Awareness Training is already being delivered to all staff and players at Falkirk FC and we take our commitment to equality seriously.

 

We will look to take action against anyone identified from today’s game and will not allow this disgraceful behaviour to be repeated.

So I was thinking on this last night and got round to recalling the bile that was spat at our club when we went into the lower leagues. The way football fans spat on the memory of Johan Cruyff 48 hours after he lost his battle with cancer, the falkirk fans throwing fake eyes on the park after one of their own players mocked a disabled player in a previous meeting, and of course, celtic fans hanging effigys from the rafters of their own stadium, leaves a very bitter and foul taste in my mouth.
