RANGERS are reportedly in the hunt for Sydney FC’s Australian U-23 midfielder Brandon O’Neill.

The Ibrox club are believed to have closely monitored the talented playmaker, a key player for the A-League champions.

 

 

 

Brandon O’Neill is out of contract in December
O’Neill holds an Irish passport and is eligible to play for Republic of Ireland too, although the 23-year-old has represented the Socceroos at youth level.

He’s out of contract in December this year and Rangers are said to be exploring the possibility of making a cut-price move for him in the summer.




O’Neill caught the eye of the Gers scouting staff during the Australian season and the ex-Perth Glory star is rated as one of the best midfielders Down Under.

The set-piece specialist has also been playing for Sydney in the Asian Champions League this season too.

Rangers will have to persuade O’Neill to consider leaving Sydney and he admitted last week that he’s loving his football at the moment.

 

He said: “It’s great for me here. I love flying into tackles and getting stuck in.

“We are all at a good place right now and everyone at the club is happy.”

Sydney are 11 points clear at the top of the A-League this season.

Meanwhile, Sydney FC’s hopes of retaining the core of their squad for next season is already being challenged with one of Britain's most famous clubs in the hunt for their first-choice central midfielder, Brandon O'Neill.

Fairfax Media understands Glasgow Rangers are monitoring the the promising 23-year-old and are interested in signing the former Australian youth international for next season.

The youngster quickly established himself as a first-team regular with the Sky Blues since joining in 2015, making 77 appearances in all competitions and scoring six goals. That rapid rise caught the attention of the Scottish giants, but a potential deal could face a hurdle of allegiances.

O'Neill holds a Republic of Ireland passport enabling him to move to Europe but that could put him at odds with sections of Rangers supporters. While the club abandoned its unwritten policy of not signing Catholic players decades ago, their fan base is pro-union and signing a player from Ireland would potentially raise eyebrows. The club has signed only two Irish players in its recent history, in 2015 while in the second tier of Scottish football.

O'Neill played for the Australian Under-23s but is yet to represent the Socceroos. It was reported in November last year the Irish Football Association, FAI, approached O'Neill about the possibility of playing for his ancestral home but he is yet to be called-up to the senior squad.

A bit interesting to note that the Aussie reporter saw need to check out our (Irish) Catholic or indeed Irish signings of late, as if either was synonymous with one another. 

 

Wonder whether anyone asked what religion Peralta, Caixinha, Herrera, Pena, Kranjcar, Morelos et all had? Or was even remotely interested in that ...

I had to google who they were. That's how big an impact their nationality made on me, and presumably a vast majority of other bears.

I really didn't take notice of their nationality. I recall Daly simply because there was a 'story' about it; no one I knew cared one jot.
