Alan McGregor going to Hearts maybe

Better than Cammy Bell but much less competent than Woods or Klos and without the match-saving genius of the goalie or even, to a lesser extent, McGregor. Alexander was a better ‘keeper.

Foderingham to me was an excellent keeper, despite the odd feck up,  with the ball at his feet when we played in the lower divisions. He doesn't have the luxury of that now and imo has been given orders not to play about and to simply hoof the ball out. He isn't as good as a keeper as the rest there.

I'll agree with most of the goalies you quoted apart from Klos - fantastic shot stopper that he was, we ended up changing our whole team formation due to his inability to kick a ball more than 5 yards. Playing two centre halfs on the 18 yard box is simply inviting disaster.

Do we ever learn about signing players in their mid thirties who are past their best ?

I still think it has to be case by case because there will always be 1 or 2 who are worth it.

Brimingham signed Barry Ferguson aged 31 and a half and he went on to have two oustanding seasons in the best league in the world. Followed by a 3rd with Blackpool in the championship (finishing 5th and reaching the play off final). Playing more than 40 games each of those 3 seasons.

Steven Davis is a current example who has fans more divided than MacGregor. He's 33 but has played almost every game for a strong side (finishing 6th-8th in 4 out of 5 of his seasons with them) in the best league in the world up until the last 2-3 months. Most of our signings need to appreciate in value but not all.

Fod hasn't had a great few weeks IMO but he's still an excellent 'keeper and it wouldn't be easy nor cheap to replace him.

I know people get annoyed at his distribution but generally he's very good with the ball at his feet and that's something not many goalies have.

We are fortunate in  that we always seem to have decent goalkeepers over the years we have had some excellent goalkeepers .

Definitely!  In all our successful periods we seem to have had a solid keeper and strong central defence pairing.  It's no coincidence.  Since we went down the divisions we've made not had anything strong enough to compete at the top level.  We were optimistic about Alves but that's not turned out very well.  Allen (in conjunction with whoever is the manager) has to get this right for us.

Unfortunately our recent record in signing players in their mid thirties has been lamentable
