Jock Stein paid tribute to the paedophile founder of Celtic FC’s feeder club a decade after he was said to have kicked him out for molesting boys, it has emerged.

Jim Torbett was today found guilty of sexually abusing a 13-year-old player, causing “incalculable harm”.

It is the third time Torbett, 75, has been jailed for attacking players at Celtic Boys Club.

Torbett was granted permission to launch and lead the boys’ club in 1966 by Stein, the Celtic FC manager, and Sir Robert Kelly, the chairman, gaining dispensation to use the club’s crest, colours and Barrowfield training ground.

Judge Andrew Cubie told him, before jailing him for three years, that he had used the club “as an elaborate front for recruitment of young victims”.

During Torbett’s first trial in 1998, where he was jailed for abusing three boys, including Alan Brazil, the broadcaster and former Scotland international, it was claimed that he was dismissed by Stein in 1974 after becoming aware of allegations of sexual abuse.

Giving evidence Hugh Birt, a former boys’ club chairman who has since died, said: “According to Mr Stein, he literally put his foot up his backside and kicked him out. It was all covered up by Celtic FC as to why he was kicked out.”

However, in December 1983 the Celtic View, the club’s official magazine, published a photograph of Stein posing between Torbett and Frank Cairney, a boy’s club coach, who was jailed in 2019 for abusing seven players.

A report from a trophy presentation night said: “Mr Stein made a particularly moving speech about the first time he was sent by Sir Robert Kelly to meet Jim Torbett, who had the idea of starting a Celtic Boys Club.

“This meeting had taken place in a small hall in Maryhill.

“Mr Stein said it was a sign of how much the boys’ club had grown that he was now among Celtic Boys Club in one of Scotland’s finest hotels.”

Stein died in 1985.

Two other former boy’s club officials have been convicted of sexual offences against children.

Cubie told Torbett that he had “caused significant damage” for the sake of his “selfish sexual gratification”.

The High Court in Inverness was told he had abused a boy in his car, in his mother’s flat, an Italian restaurant and in a toy shop where the teenager had been put to work creating souvenirs celebrating Celtic’s European Cup Victory in 1967.

The former player, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said Torbett made him wear the club’s shorts before attacking him as he and another boy slept in the same bed.

Torbett returned to Celtic Boys Club in 1978 and remained there until 1996 when fresh abuse allegations emerged.

He ran Celtic FC’s chain of club shops in the early 1990s and organised testimonial events for first team players and coaches, including Tommy Burns and Sean Fallon.

Torbett’s company, The Trophy Centre, had a long-term contract with the club, reported to be worth £250,000.

He was imprisoned for another six years in 2018 for sexually abusing boys between 1986 and 1994. The youngest was aged five. He will resume that sentence and has the further term to serve.

During his latest trial Torbett insisted he was a “decent man”.

“I will keep repeating that till the day I die,” he said.

You could now say it’s official big Jock did know and buried his head in the sand I am all for stripping every trophy from this club from the time Torbett and Cairney were linked to them .
