MONEY TALKS

Sky Sports set to plough £100million into Scottish football as they blow BT Sport out of the picture in TV rights battle

The broadcasting giant has lined up a three-year deal worth £30m-plus per season to take over TV coverage of the Premiership from the 2020-21 campaign.

SKY SPORTS are set to plough £100million into Scottish football.

They have lined up a three-year TV rights deal worth a whopping £30m-plus per season, blowing BT Sport out of the picture.

They would take over coverage of the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership from the 2020-21 campaign.

And it could leave fierce rival BT Sport with NOTHING.

The deal would see Sky Sports claiming at least 60 matches a season, including the coveted four Old Firm derbies, plus end of season Premiership play-offs.

The present joint TV agreement between the stations — with each screening 30 matches a season and BT Sport also covering the Premiership play-offs — is worth just £21 million a year.

Industry sources were last night indicating BT have been ‘blown out of the water’ with their attempt to extend their coverage and are bracing themselves for bad news.

An October deadline for bids to replace the existing joint Sky Sports-BT Sport contract which expires in 2020 has left SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster in a position to decide which is the most lucrative package.

An announcement confirming the next TV deal is expected soon.

An SPFL spokesperson said: “We are in regular dialogue with broadcasters with a view to securing the best deal for SPFL clubs and supporters from 2020.”

Both Sky and BT refused to comment.

A whopping 30m ?...?

If the starting point is £2,419m and we take off the International TV deal and the Central Commercial (I'm assuming that it's not part of the UK TC deal either) then we get to £1,507m. the Scottish population is a 10th of the English, so we reduce it down to £150m. There's 2.8 times more English Premiership games shown so proportionately it brings the £150m down to £54m, If we then discount the deal by 45% as Scottish football is a crap product then you get back to £30m!

If I look at the current EPL table and see the likes of Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Brighton, Watford, Fulham, Burnley and Wolves competing, I actually have to double-check whether it is really the EPL table. When I grew up to BBC World Service and BBC 2 / 5 and James Alexander Gordon's voice, these names weren't up there ... and not for the 30odd years thereafter.

Think there may have been people putting money into these traditionally not top league sides just to get them to the el dorado of the EPL.

If they get there then the ocean of money comes washing in and even if they're immediately relegated parachute payments make it worth it.

I know what you mean, dB, but the Wolves and to a lesser extent, Burnley, have some pedigree.

Sky Sports to become the home of Ladbrokes Premiership from 2020

Sky Sports has agreed a new five-year partnership with the Scottish Professional Football League.

Last Updated: 19/11/18 6:38pm

Sky Sports will be the only place to see live Ladbrokes Premiership action from 2020, after agreeing a new five-year partnership with the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL).

Sky Sports will show up to 48 live Ladbrokes Premiership matches every season, as well as the nail-biting Premiership/Championship Play-offs, on its dedicated channel, Sky Sports Football.

As well as being able to watch live Ladbrokes Premiership action every weekend of the season, Sky Sports customers will be able to follow every twist and turn with in-game clips delivered straight to their device and highlights of every single Ladbrokes Premiership fixture.

With Celtic's dominance being challenged by Steven Gerrard's Rangers, a resurgent Hearts and Hibs, Steve Clarke's Kilmarnock and last year's runners-up Aberdeen, the Ladbrokes Premiership has never been more competitive.

And that has been reflected in viewing, with audiences for Ladbrokes Premiership games on Sky Sports this year soaring 87 per cent, year-on-year.

Barney Francis, Sky Sports' managing director, said: "This is a hugely exciting time for Scottish football - something that has been reflected in the number of fans tuning in to watch on Sky Sports.

"With more games, in-game clips and highlights of every single Ladbrokes Premiership clash, fans won't miss a minute. Add in live coverage of Scotland's Nations League campaign, and every European Championship and World Cup Qualifier and we've really got the Scottish game covered."

Neil Doncaster, Chief Executive of the Scottish Professional Football League, commented: "I am delighted that we have been able to secure an exclusive partnership with the UK's leading sports broadcaster. This deal demonstrates Sky Sports' commitment to showcasing the pinnacle of Scottish football."

Sky Sports coverage of the SPFL is hosted by Hayley McQueen, with expert analysis from Andy Walker, Kris Boyd, Kris Commons and more.

Fans can keep up with the latest developments in the Scottish game via weekly debate show, SPFL Matters, via Sky Sports News, across SkySports.com and a range of social and platforms.

The SPFL is the latest example of Sky Sports securing rights for the long term, and offering customers even more value: 128 Premier League games a season from next season, with more of the biggest games; up to 182 games a season from the EFL, through to 2024; the exclusive home of Formula One from 2019; the only place to see England home cricket and the new domestic T20 competition live through to 2024; and many more.
