The Winter 2022/23 Rangers Transfer Window Rumours and Deals - Thread

Beale metioned transfer outgoings and with finances needing to be looked after, you'd imagine it won't just be McCann  leaving this window.

If Cantwell is the "first teamer" in the creative role behind the forwards, you wonder if the Tillman option gets less likely to be taken. I'm sure Beale would want him but can the finances support that deal and everything else that needs addressed ?

Beale speaks of 2 players for every jersey

Would that be Cantwell, Tillman and Lowry for the 10 role ?

There are ideal options and choices but viability comes ever more into the equation.

OP updated for ...

IN - Alex Yiga (16) - Kampala Capital City Authority, Uganda, on trial - LINK

OUT - Josh McPake - Gateshead or Yeavil - permanent deal - LINK

... that Yiga chap is a talented prospected and rated highly, much like McCann and McPake were back in the day. But we shall see, certainly one for the B-Team.

Just thinking about the cross ball and goals reminded me of Tommy McLean and Derek Johnstone.

There are precious few Tommy McLeans in the world today. Possibly Rangers' best post war winger

McLean could literally land the ball on a sixpence such was the accuracy if his deliveries into the box

Playing Tav and Borna as "wingers" has been done by SG and Gio too. Various degrees of success. If only we had strikers in the box since we "didn't need" a winger anymore.

In any case, where do you expect Cantwell to pop up?

Not sure why you mention that SG and Gio used Borna and Tav as wingers because I never said they didnt.... except Gio actually didnt utilise Borna as a winger very much - Borna very rarely went beyond Kent because Kent was hugging the touchline, there was nowhere for Borna to overlap under Gio - as proven with the horseshoe football he had us playing.

We do have strikers in the box now when Borna is delivering crosses - did Morelos not score against Killie with a headed goal from a cross ?  Did Sakala not sky one at the back post against Killie from a deep cross ?

As for Cantwell - from what I have seen of him I actually think he can play through the middle - recall seeing him play very well there for Norwich in the Prem.  But think he can play across the attacking 3 in a 4-2-3-1 - can see Beale having him and Kent being interchangeable with a fluidity to make them difficult to mark.

He also had an impressive burst of speed over 20 yards that made room for those crosses. Like you say, his crossing accuracy was phenomenal at times.

Yes, you very rarely see that in the modern game; too much of this 'inverted winger stuff.' I liked to see the winger go past the FB on the outside and drive a cross in for the CF to bullet home.

Disagree.  When used properly the "inverted winger" stuff works very well indeed, better than just getting past a player and sending a ball in.

With the inverted winger model you have a full back who gets into the space on the wing and then sends a cross in - but he also has the option of passing inside to the inverted winger who has played him the ball and then cut inside - plus, the inverted winger now also can be an additional body in the box for any cross or second ball.
