Rangers appoint Russell Martin as head coach

At the time it seemed grim but it was never over by Hallowe’en. The

last dozen seasons has been mostly embarrassing.

Tavernier has been an excellent player for Rangers but the last two seasons show that his athleticism is falling off. Why wouldn’t it? That said, he has never been captain material which is not a criticism. Neither were Laudrup or Gascoigne.

Curiosity who was Captain before Tav, also Was he the longest serving player?  as some clubs usually go with the most  senior players as there captains rather than leadership.

They are serial losers. Tav has been Captain for a fair chunk of that time.

We finish second in a two horse race and have done consistently... part of that is our 'Captain' to blame

So was John Greig and his teams serial losers? The greatest ever Ranger a serial loser? At least Tavs in good company

Before my time mate to be honest and I dont mean that offensively. In my lifetime Rangers Captains have been like Gough Ferguson (Barry) etc. Tav should have been sold at least two seasons ago. The fact Martin has come out and backed him has alarm bells ringing already

I think the idea that Martin has come out and backed Tavernier is pure projection.

From what I can see, the whole quote is more diplomatic:

“Then how much he gets used on the pitch will be down to Tav and how he trains and how he plays, the same as every player. But he's going to be hugely important in the culture. I know what he's like as a person behind the scenes and he's fantastic."

“How much he plays on the pitch, I can't sit here and tell you he's going to play 50 games, 20 games, whatever. It will be down to him in the way he performs and the way he buys into it, which I'm pretty sure he will."

'When asked if he would be comfortable with Tavernier as captain of a Russell Martin Rangers team, the coach added: “If he's playing. He's been the captain for a very long time. I don't see any reason to change that. And if he's not playing, it will force someone else [to be captain].”'

Losing is never good but Greig’s teams didn’t capitulate the way recent Rangers teams have done. That’s not Tavernier’s fault entirely but I’m sure Gough would have bludgeoned the players to try a bit harder.

Tav produced some good performances in the latter stages of the season especially in Europe. I was previously critical saying his legs had gone.

No reason why he cant be club captain but not team captain. The question is who else takes the arm band. Id say Souttar and Raskin are the only possibilities which is worrying as we should have 5 or 6 candidates.
