League to be extended

Recommended Posts

The season has been extended 24 times since the war...there's a really good article about this on FF....with the reason being that players need time to rest and recover after games....surely in this season of all season's that can be appreciated.

Yeah, I thought that FF just stating it as a fact was pretty poor. You have to back it up with years and dates - with citations to support it.

Any less and you look like you could be just making it up.

Lets not forget it was the Scum who caused this. Asking for the Ne'erday game to be cancelled because a Former player, who had nothing to do with the club anymore passed away.

Swings and roundabouts for the SPL, and we never get the rub of the green (if you will pardon that pun!)

Celtic are basically trying to cheat their way to the title ââ?¬â?? especially when you consider they requested our game to be postponed.

This is the most pertinent part of what we are seeing with Celtic deeming that extending the season "calls into question its integrity".

There would be NO NEED to extend had they not wanted the postponement anyway - or at least a lesser need.

I couldn't agree more Calscot - it is being conveniently forgotten that part of the reason we are struggling to play our fixtures is because THEY wanted to postpone a game for a player (no disrespect to P O'D) who has not represented them for TEN years !!

As requested:

Between season 1946-47 and season 1989-90 (the last time it was extended) the Scottish senior league programme has seen fixtures occur after the scheduled end 24 times in 44 seasons - more than half.

Since 89-90 two major factors have made the need for extension less onerous - the lack of Scottish clubs competing in the later stages of European competition and the prevalence of under-soil heating.

The statistics clearly show that historically the Scottish game has regularly extended itself to accommodate the vagaries of fixture build-up. Sportsmanship demands that players be given a reasonable amount of time between competitive games.

That being the case the motivations for those opposed to extending the season must be called into question.

The years the league was extended and the winners that season.

What grates me is that if it were the Dhims, it would be done - no questions.

!

Not really, Celtic did try and failed to have the league sorted in 2003 so the OF game would be moved and they were told no, the SPL dont give a toss about the OF in europe they have sown that time and time again and this wont be the last time either. :uzi:

thanks bluedell...saved a bit of research on my part...i do tend to take the FF articles as being factual, if a little loaded on our side...but as far as the season is concerned we live in a rainy country where games are postponed all the time...so surely there should always be contingency plans that would also include the possibility that one of our teams may do well in european cup competition...and well done Walter for telling it exactly as it is!

But were they not afforded a week off before they played in Europe (ok it was the final, but we might be there!!)

The point is, extending it by a week really means nothing. It would at least mean we don't have to play 4 games in 8 days, which is not really on. The Dhim's got the Ne'erday game cancelled, for what I can see as nothing really. OK he was a former player, but he was no big star! Now are the SPL stating that it is Ranger sfault the weather scuppered a few games? OK its not the SPL's fault, but by being so stonewall negative it can be interpretated as so, and as such extending it would ensure that all teams egt a fair crack. The weather has been to blame for a fair share of the back log. OK we had replays, but are these not provisioned for by the SPL and SFA? If not, why not?
