Yep, we should have had a proper mix to beat those sides. The confident Scottish spine of Goram, Gough, I Ferguson, McCoist should have been blended much better with the foreigners. I remember watching a re-run of a game not so long ago with a 3-5-2 in Europe. Both Cleland and Moore were in the midfield. Fair play to Dick Advocaat for realising how good a centre half Moore was. He should have been lining up next to Gough on many occasions before moving to Palace.

Didn't Spain play it just before Scotland when Villa and Torres were both injured so the played 4-6-0 with Fabregas being the furthest forward. Obviously it worked a treat for them. Levein trying it was a joke. West Ham shocked Spurs with 4-6-0 against Spurs and winning 3-0 but it was a one-off and Allardyce should have realised that, but he tried it against Man City and it back fired. If you have 2 or 3 pacey wide players then it can work especially on the counter.

Is it fair to say we never got the best out of quite a number of quality players (not quite world class). This may be due to a few reasons like they were winding down their career, couldn't adapt to Scottish style of play and many more. We had a pretty good record at signing players with pedigree who had success at World cup and European level. To name a few: Kuznetzov - A lot been said already Van Vossen - I remember him coming with big reputation but other than a few glimpses he failed to impress. Salenko - Scored 5 goals in 1 game at the world cup. Porrini - A champions league winner with Juventus who were a cracking side. He didn't have a bad Rangers career, just not spectacular. (played RB a lot rather than CH) Boli - Another CL winner who didn't last long. Rosental - Was hot property in South America and getting into the Chile side with Salas and Zameramo both who were cracking. Obviously injury was his downfall. I remember being at the game he got injured against St Johnstone, he just jumped for a header and his studs got stuck in the turf. Such an unlucky one. Prodan - Never kicked a ball. Thern - Was cracking for Sweden and captained them to the WC 94 semi's. But looked well out of place for us. Thinking back we probably under achieved in Europe for a few seasons considering the players we had, money that was spend. For a few seasons we were shocking in Europe losing against teams like AEK Athens, Rosenburg and Copenhagen when we should have been beating teams like that.

Fulham's first strike against Palace, easily goal of the season, I cant imagine a better goal than that will be scored. It was better than Van Persie's from last season. It is up there with the very best. If that was Rooney doing that they would be talking about it as the best goal the premier league has seen. And their second by Sidwell wasn't a bad effort either! I still need confirmation on what Jim Traynor is doing apart from living a journalists dream being on the inside for the biggest soap opera of the decade. I had decent hopes for him too.

I always have had a thought that the formation should be balanced out over the pitch, 3-4-3 being the most obvious. Wigan showed in spells last season that when playing it right its effective.

This was going to be my next post, if you are a top European player you are pretty much world class as its the Europeans and South Americans who have mainly graced the game and have the top leagues and standard of player. I think another way to split it is whether you play at top club level (European competition) or on the World Stage. Because 'world class' players such as Giggs and Best never got to do it on the international stage so that makes them certainly top European quality. I take your point on Ferguson and he did do more for Rangers but if we are talking quality overall then Gio did it at higher levels. A good question would be, if they were both at their pomp right now who would you take in the team first? Gio did also play a lot on the left side of midfield (more an inside left) but he isn't going to be able to shift Laudrup or Cooper from the wide slots.

I cant believe I left out R De Boer, not sure how on earth I managed that one. I guess I was going 4-4-2 and when reaching the strikers I was looking for 2 forwards. But I would edit the team and put De Boer in for Prso. I couldn't put Baxter in as I was basing it on players I have seen. But Im sure an older bear could list an XI with the class players from 60s and 70s. I like the idea of the category of European Class and admit it would take the 7/11 down. Albertz is a funny one. One of my all time favourites but couldn't get a mention, he was certainly one of our better performers. Reyna was a fine player but wouldn't make it for me. Tugay and Kanchelskis certainly would be european quality players. Going into that category Jonas Thern was a fine player, he captained Sweden to 3rd at WC 94, but he was past his best when coming to Rangers.

So from my own view putting together a near world class team from players Ive seen (I only remember Jardine at Hearts - just) Remember this is a 'NEAR' WC team IMO manly judging on Rangers days. Goram - Hands down World Class IMO. Should have had more caps from WC 98 when he didn't go. Broke into the National team when Leighton (arguably best goalie in Britain at the time) was No.1. If you think the goalie just did it for Rangers then the Euro 96 game v Holland sticks in my mind - MOTM performance. G Stevens - Englands first choice RB at the time ad helped Everton to success. Would have been more highly decorated if he didn't peak when Englands club sides were banned from Europe. But doesn't make World Class for me. Gough - Maybe starting off his career as a full back cut down the amount of caps he got but he grew as the best centre half Ive ever seen in a blue jersey. World Class IMO. Butcher - England captain at the time keeps F De Boer (An absolute class act) out of the team simply because he was at his peak for Rangers and was central to the recovery in the late 80s. We got De Boer too late. Big Tel was World Class for me. Numan - Another class act on and off the pitch. I was a massive David Robertson fan who was superb in the 90s but Numan could have played in most sides on the planet. World Class Laudrup - Best ever Ger. Best ever player to play in Scotland for me. Transformed the Scottish game and I still remember his debut v Motherwell when he ran most of the pitch setting up the winner for Duncan Ferguson. He was also a standout against Brazil in France 98, and won Euro 92. Absolute World Class. Gascoigne - Could and should have fitted into the same category as Maradona. If he had Ryan Giggs brain to keep himself fit then disciplined then he would have been our best ever but he possibly would have been a Man Utd player. Most talented British player off all time, pipping Best. World Class when he wanted to be. Van Bronkhurst - This place was tough and is the only one I had to think about, but Gio went onto being a quality act for Arsenal and Barcelona. Durrant would have this place barring his injury and Souness was the other choice had he came to Ibrox earlier. Not putting him in the World Class bracket though. Cooper - I was slighty young to appreciate the late great Davie Cooper in full but still recall some top quality and nerves of steal. Taking Ruud Guillit's comments on board you have to say WC. R De Boer - That's that fixed! WC McCoist - As good a penalty box striker as there was around and could also score some screamers (Switzerland Euro 96). 2 European golden boots!!! Very controversial one as to whether he was WC or not. Probably a world class poacher but overall world class player? Not for me. 8 out of 11 I put were world class then.

Done! And glad I did. System had my old Hotmail account which was hacked about 3 years ago and therefore not used since. I did say Id get a verification email to activate my account but its still work ok without clicking on it. -
The top 3 will be Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City, but not sure in what order. Chelsea are still winning games despite not playing well and Man City are capable of winning most games. If Arsenal avoid injuries then they will be up there. But I still think they are a defender short. But they still have Podolski, Walcott and Ox-Chamberlain to come back so there will be more width and goals from that. Liverpool should have beat Newcastle with an extra man but there isn't enough class in their squad to win the league. Man Utds appointment of Moyes is getting more baffling by the week. They should have went for continued success in Mourinho and he'd have attracted big name players. But they have wasted 27 million on Felliani who is a good player but not a Man Utd type player.

I would put Maradona, Pele, Zidane etc into an exceptional elite group. They would obviously still be in the world class category but also go one or two steps higher.

Yes Porrini wasn't a mention to be a world class player but just stating he was a CL winner. Same as Boli for me - scored the winner one season in the CL but not world class. But Kanchelskis at Man Utd was, not sure how that could be classed as bizarre. Same as Hateley, absolute top notch striker in his day.

Mols destroying Motherwell scoring all 4 goals at Ibrox not long after he signed. I wondered why Advocaat was letting Amato go as I thought he was silky enough but Mols was an absolute gem unearthed.

Charbonnier was a world cup winner when he joined but not as nearly as good as Goram or Klos (and even Niemi). So it puts that question again of what is World Class, do you go by medals? And is it fair to not class someone due to the league they are? You can have a list of players who were World Class in their overall career and those who were World Class at Rangers. The De Boer's being the most obvious example as Frank was world class before joining yet Ronald was world class while at Rangers. Two names who Id add who were world class IMO and havent been mentioned: Andrei Kanchelskis (more so at Man Utd) and Mark Hateley. EDIT - Wasn't Sergio Porrini another CL winner with Juventus?

Good for us this time. If there was anything ridding on the game for Scotland Id want the best team available and Wallace would start, but there we are only playing for places in the group.

That's interesting. Perhaps he needs an arm around the shoulder to give him some confidence but his old man should have drilled into him what its like. Of course Durrants comments a few months ago don't help when he said something along the lines of players shouldn't be there if they cant adapt. Whilst he has a point there is a way of making players feel more confident. But if your assistant manager is coming out with that and offering no support it can make players feel intimidated with their surroundings.

I stated he was turning out to be the next Alan Gow because he joined as promising yet hasn't had a chance to show anything. My second sentence was to suggest there is absolutely nothing to state why he couldn't do a job for us given he would have even more resources and playing with better players.
