HEARTWRENCHINGWe will call him Willie, primarily because that is his name. Willie is only nine years older than me, but that nine years holds more to it due to what I recount below. He tells this story now with the same face from whence I first heard it. There is a kind of emptiness behind his normally laughing eyes. I was going to pen my own words for this part of the story, but as he has already had articles printed for him in various publications, I will leave it to an article that the Herald printed a few years ago. By his own admission it is the better of all the articles he has been a part of and one which he can still read. Here is an excerpt of the article below. http://www.vanguardbears.co.uk/article.php?i=88&a=two-stories-of-contrast-from-older-supporters

from FF Sheffield & Districts bash on Wednesday... Just like to say a thankyou to all those who attended our wee shindig on Wednesday, a great day with groups from the Glassy, Bristol, Inverness, Surrey, Hemsworth etc, etc. Also a big thankyou from the landord who was mightily impressed When we first booked the place he had a few doubts, mostly due to the press re our support and the fact the place had a 250k refurb earlier this year so we went over a few times and had a chat with him, getting to the point where he accepted we wouldn't need doorman on etc Well afterwards he couldn't wait to come over and thank us - -you - for what he classed as a terrific day, no trouble, good humoured and the police had spoke to him and said how pleased they were with the organisation He also told us, on more than one occasion, that we would be welcomed back anytime for any similar sort of bash in the future. So last time to all those who came along and made it part of a day to remember - thankyou apparently this is where the final scenes of The Full Monty were filmed

[h=1]Force praises well-behaved football fans[/h] South Yorkshire police has today praised the city of Sheffield and the thousands of football fans who ensured last night’s first ever match between Sheffield Wednesday and Rangers passed off virtually without incident. More than 4.700 away fans, from Scotland and many parts of England, converged on the city for the game which Wednesday won 1-0. Weeks of planning went into the policing operation last night, involving officers, PCSOs, Specials and support staff, with support from many partner agencies including city centre licensees. And the operation has been hailed as a success – with only two fans ejected from the ground and one officer suffering a minor injury in an incident outside Hillsborough. Chief Insp Iain Chorlton, who commanded the operation, said: “I’d like to thank everyone, from fans to licensees, to our partners and the officers and staff, whose professionalism, careful planning and friendly style of policing struck the right chord with fans. “With a Grand Prix cycle race happening at the same time, and with roads having to be closed for that event, there was always the possibility that the night could have presented difficulties. The hot weather, coupled with nearly 5,000 visiting away fans, many of whom arrived in the city from mid morning and began drinking, could have presented significant problems for residents and business alike. “I’m delighted, however, that the match proved so successful and enjoyable for just about everyone who attended it. There was undoubtedly high spirits, and many fans had clearly drunk a fair bit of alcohol, but most will wake up this morning with nothing but clear – and happy - memories of the match and the evening as a whole.” The policing operation for the ‘pre-season friendly’ began in earnest on Tuesday and involved more than 220 officers and staff including officers in support from West Yorkshire Police. More than 40, fifty-two seater coaches, eight mini buses, and thousands of train and car passengers converged on Sheffield, joined by thousands of home fans, many of whom made their way to Hillsborough on foot. Chief Insp Chorlton added: “I would like to thank all fans for making sure the match such a memorable, safe and happy event. The fixture has set the tone for the forthcoming season.” - See more at: http://www.southyorkshire.police.uk/news-syp/force-praises-well-behaved-football-fans#sthash.Hiy8fp0w.dpuf

RANGERS fans are set to create a party atmosphere at Hillsborough tomorrow night when Ally McCoistâ??s side continues the build-up to the big kick-off. And they are being asked to continue to display the positive image which has been built up in the last few years when the Light Blues take on Sheffield Wednesday. There could be close to 20,000 inside one of Englandâ??s most famous stadiums with thousands of Rangers fans ready to roar on their team. And the Championship club are ready to welcome the Bears with open arms for the glamour friendly which kicks offs at 8pm. Rangersâ?? Safety and Security team David Martin and Robin Howe have been at Hillsborough and met with the stadium management and everyone is looking forward to the visit of the team and the fans and they will be guaranteed a warm welcome. Coaches will park at Claywheels Lane which is a short distance from the stadium and there will be no charge for parking. Coaches carrying supporters should exit the M1 at Junction 36 where they will be met by police and then escorted to the parking area. Fans are advised that telescopic poles will not be allowed in the ground, but they are free to bring banners and flags. It promises to be a carnival atmosphere at Hillsborough and itâ??s an opportunity to maintain a good relationship with Wednesday. Most importantly any Rangers fans who have bought tickets for the home section of the ground will be directed to turnstiles 1-6 in the north stand where they will be located with fellow fans. So all the Bears will be together ready to back the team and show pride in their club. Read more on the official site...
