  1. “Bloody tunnel’s come up four feet short”
  2. Maybe he’s in front of the wire looking in.
  3. A couple of them came on for the last fifteen minutes against Arsenal. Gunners schooled by schoolboys.
  4. That team had season long stamina of mind and body.
  5. I think the “Jack” he refers to is the ‘keeper, Jack Butland, not Ryan Jack.
  6. Lammers wouldn’t get on to Alaves’ bench. Would Cantwell?
  7. Brum have appointed Mowbray. Right move.
  8. Not how I remember it but small screen black and white telly makes it hard to judge.
  9. And Angelo Domenghini. It was 1965. I’ve still got the ticket. Roger Hynd was terrific that night. Thought I’d seen the new George Young. I was wrong.
  10. Standout player at the 1966 World Cup
  11. I think I confused myself with double ju-ju there. Pity the Board doesn’t have a resident witch doctor to advise on protocols. Best match of the round. Arsenal had five scoring opportunities in the first ten minutes and plenty more throughout the match but could do nothing. Martinelli came on and was unstoppable for five minutes then seemed t lose his touch completely. In the last quarter hour Liverpool brought on two primary schoolboys. They played like Bobby Moore and Franz Beckenbauer. Wednesday beat Cardiff City. Two questions. How did Wednesday manage to score four goals? How did Cardiff not score about six minimum from umpteen chances including two saved penalties? The Tyne/Wear Derby was a sensational spectacle of noise, fanaticism, hatred and colour, then the football started and it wasn’t so good after that.
  12. Liverpool will win the tournament, Manchester United an outside bet. The meaning of this is that Arsenal will cruise to victory this evening and United might be struggling at Wigan.
  13. Big cop out. Very few people’s work is free from scrutiny. Get it right and nobody will moan at you. Admit when you’re wrong and the moaning doesn’t disappear but it’s considerably reduced.
  14. Was it half? Rotten attendance at Boro tonight.
  15. Easy 3-0 for Newcastle. The hand of Beale was visible. Sunderland were sent out to defend. That’s ok but the defence had to be sharp with fast closing down and sure tackling not standing off and conceding ground.
  16. Not a wrong word in that except I thought the spalpeen actually flicked the ball over the line with his hand. Penalty morning, noon and night.
  17. Never mind watching garlic eaters. Stadium of Light is the place to be.
  18. I remember the whole ‘Spurs team. A pair of horses at centre half and centre forward, a couple of craftsmen fullbacks and the rest were outstanding.
  19. How true is that. The two outstanding are di Stefano and Puskas. Then come the others and plenty of them. Gento, Mazzola, Schiaffino for the relics among us. There were two players, not big names but caused Rangers no end of trouble, Grillo of AC in 1957 and Johnny Crossan, Irish Republican, of Sparta Rotterdam 1960ish.
  20. ‘Spurs nearly Hibsed it.
  21. ‘Spurs v Burnley is dull viewing. 0-0 after sixty seven minutes. Burnley ‘keeper looks good. Distribution from hand erratic, competent with ball at foot and saves well. (Cue 4-0)
