Financial backing is part of the equation, but it's nothing compared to actually being tactical proficient. Like I said, the game's moved on. It's unlikely to be repeated.
-
It wasn't my point, but can you really see that happening now? Perhaps, but it's unlikely IMO.
-
That's not the only 'imaginative project' -- I wouldn't even call it imaginative; we're looking at his playing career, which is meaningless wrt whether he'll be a good manager. I'd support it, but I wouldn't say I'd "get into that". The game's moved on: you can't gain success from a new manager, with a good playing career, with an experienced #2, whatever that means, IMO. Nicholls and Murty represent that combination.
-
Ah, is that what you meant? A better path into the Liverpool top job eventually? That makes sense. He may still need to move on to gain experience first, though. I don't know.
-
What if he's looking to learn under someone? I don't think a 'galvanising' appointment works nowadays; it's a different game.
-
Maybe, but if he's joining under someone, that someone may offer him a better chance to learn. He does want to be a manager some day. This is pure speculation, though.
-
I really can't see him being the #1. Could Gerard be the #2? And, if he is, does that offer any obvious choices for a #1?
-
Just realised Candeias isn't there; that's ridiculous! Obviously, they're saving Windass for the Ballon d'Or...

Klopp asks fans to 'show respect' to Roma
Rousseau replied to JFK-1's topic in General Football Chat
Roma were bad; their three-CBs were all over the place, which was surprising as they defended really well against Barca. They'll reach the final, as they just need that away goal, which should come -- although Roma haven't conceded at home. On their day Liverpool are blistering, but there's always that fragility there. I still see a Bayern or Real taking advantage of that. -
He'd be a good signing. 'Shagger' and Foderingham can fight it out for #1. When we need to sit in and produce a 'backs-against-the-wall' performance McGregor can come in, but when we need to distribution and a more offensive game Foderingham can come in.
-
If those are your two options, all of it.
-
I think you need to read up on it.
-
We'd need to judge the recruitment alongside the performances on the pitch going forward. Murty is not a good manger either. You could argue our recruitment has been good, but the manager has not been able to do his side of things.
-
'Big team', great players doesn't guarantee success. His tactical innovations has taken them to a new level. I'm not discussing this any more; it was an aside. We'll just agree to disagree.
-
He was involved in the turnaround, wrt to the behind-the-scenes development of young players; it's one of the reasons why he was appointed. I don't get this need to dismiss a manager's record, or performance, as nothing special simply because he's at a big team. Anyway, this is not the point of the thread. I only mentioned him because he exemplifies the 'right man for the job' idea.
-
Subjective. The stats show he's one of our best contributors to goals, whether that's scoring them, assisting them, or being involved in the build-up. I don't mind dropping him for a rest, or to suit the tactical plan etc., but I have no time for some of the criticism bandied about.
-
No way can you say that. He's transformed them. There was a period of 10 years where they were garbage. If it's the right man anyone one of those teams will be successful -- maybe not Scotland... -- and conversely, the wrong man will have them languishing.
-
Yes, my mistake. Low does have an ok group of players. Mourinho wouldn't, but Guardiola would!
-
Yes, we weren't that good against Hearts; they made us look good. Nothings really changed.

From a certain point of view, one could argue that Potter is pragmatic, respected and has experience over a number of years. The issue is perhaps the level of that experience. Defeating Voldemort is no small achievement... *gets coat*
-
One could argue that he is pragmatic. Experience maybe an issue, but it shouldn't rule anyone out if they are the right candidate -- I'm repeating myself, but Joachim Low.
-
Maybe, but Potter has been successful over a longer term, albeit in the Swedish lower leagues. Experience should rule anyone out, as long as they're the right candidate. Joachim Low was a nobody before taking Germany to new heights (relatively speaking!).
-
The DoF should be doing that. Then any manager should be scouted to meet those needs and philosophy. Southampton keep a black box on managers that they want to, or could, continue their style and philosophy. The managers fit into the club's philosophy.
-
There are negatives -- although your's is just local culture I presume, so he'll not be doing that here! It's a big step up for him. It's a good step for him. For us, maybe too much of a gamble? Again...
