Or Gio is planning to play 3-5-2 in some games (as he did last season with Lundstram dropping into back line)? Certainly gives us options and as you say, we're not spending money on Davies to be a squad-filler, it looks like he'll be a starter.

All transfers have a risk attached, and like you I trust Gio and our recruitment team. Liverpool bought him and didn't play him and he was loaned to Sheffield United. He was a standout when he played for Preston and his career has not taken off (as yet).

The fee is £3M with £1M add on. Not a bad fee for a player who's played nearly 200 games in Championship. We do need a CB - Helander is injured and can't be relied on, Katic and Simpson aren't good enough, which only leaves Soutar and King. Sands to fill in if / when required but is a midfield player. Doesn't take away from the fact that we still need a left back (and centre forward) and think we'll sign one or two more players before the season starts.

Same with Patterson and Tav - raked in circ £35-£40M for two players who weren't established 1st team players. Don't get me wrong, Patterson and Bassey are both excellent players, but this has to be seen as a positive. This has to be our model going forward. Fans may not like it, but getting huge fees for "potential" is massive. That's why we signed 4 of 5 players for the B Team. Lowry and McCann look like the two who could be next. Both have huge potential and clubs already sniffing around Lowry - that's why it was essential we got him signed up on a new contract. I wrote an article almost quarter of a century ago saying that we needed to invest more in youth and development teams as that is where the profit comes - Patterson and Bassey are proof this works.

Let's not forget, Bassey was written off by the majority of the Rangers support after a dreadful performance against St Mirren. Fans are ruthless and make snap judgements on players that often clouds their opinions. Borna is a decent left back but only in a system where he is attacking more than defending (as he was under SG). However with the sale of Bassey we need a left back as a matter of urgency and would say same applies to CH position (King is untested, Katic and Simpson are not good enough, Soutar untested at European level and Helander is always injured). This also highlights that we have a bloated squad - as well as the above, we have players like Kelly, Middleton, McPake and even Roofe that need to be moved on to free up space for new and better players to be added to the squad.

A left back and centre half still required and depending on Alfie and Roofe injury progress / being sold, another striker.

Another positive is that Aribo was the only regular starter over the last 3 seasons. Patterson was a reserve right back and up until last season, Bassey was a reserve left / centre back.

Circa £50M from sale of Patterson, Aribo and Bassey - we spent £500K on Aribo and Bassey. Business model starting too take shape and pay dividends.

H&H saying it's €22M plus €5M add-ons and a 10% sell on fee. Decent business and wish Calvin Bassey all the very best and another one who is welcome back to Ibrox anytime. Interesting to see who is brought in to replace CB and how much Gio gets to invest in the squad.
