Is Ally the Man for the job? - The McCoist Thread
calscot replied to 54andcounting's topic in Rangers Chat
Can you explain what tactics are stopping professional players from beating a lesser talented team? Someone will mention the long ball but funnily enough, in all the games I watched there was very few long balls except from Alexander - and that seemed to be his personal preference rather than any tactics. Besides, shouldn't these players be able to win the ball in the air? I'm sorry but I see little evidence of us playing badly due to tactics. I'm sure the tactics are not to pass badly, lose the ball easily, and to defend ineptly. What are the penalty tactics that lost us the shoot-out? Our team should really be able to win no matter what the tactics are. Unfortunately they don't seem to be playing consistently well, while the opposition are playing out of their skins. -
We also currently have a middling SPL-level squad so to face the top of that league against Motherwell with that in mind, is not a mouthwatering prospect.
-
I found out about that game about five days later in an article about how both they and we were not finding it as easy as everyone thought.
-
If we get another 25k for the game it will just show the consistency of Rangers fans - who go to see Rangers and are not so bothered about the opposition. When you get a bigger crowd against Montrose than Liverpool do against Man U, it's obvious who the opposition is, is not so crucial. The SPL have really shown that they are more pathetic in many ways than most of the SFL and as such are not a box-office draw. The only exception is obviously Celtic. In fact, I'd say Rangers fans are no longer interested in the SPL at all.

Not that hard. "I wonder why." is NOT a question and is often used as rhetorical sarcasm. "Can someone tell me why?" IS a question but would be even better if qualified with "I'm genuinely curious, can someone explain why?" I'm sure there are enough characters in the message for that - or you just post two in a row. So either it's not difficult, or I'm just really good at it...

Were they opposed. Although part of this is that your average member will have no idea who to vote for - just like in politics. However, politics gets round that with the party system, election campaigns and media exposure. Just who do you vote for between Nigel Nobody and Harry Who? What ends up happening is that those already on the board persuade people who they think will be like minded and willing to join them and they are elected unopposed. Other times you end up with the only people that feel obligated or interested in doing it. Saying you are democratically elected and chosen to represent your members is sometimes a bit of a stretch in many cases.
-
They should also realise that they have to be very careful with wording as it is easy to infer things from a short message on screen. Sometimes you need to be explicit.
-
Really? I was under the impression that that was not the case. When I was last a member of the RST, most of the committee seemed to be co-opted onto the board.
-
So then fans find out he capitulated the titles and trophies, massive fan backlash, no season ticket renewals and no floatation... Sounds a bit risky to me - and yes, stupid. I think Green is way, way too canny to fall for that one.
-
I wanted to sign the petition against the corruption in Scottish football, but found I'm excluded from doing so due to it only being for people of certain religious and political beliefs...
-
You think Green is that stupid?

Don't think it will. There are a lot of factors in how big an attendance is for a Tuesday night Challenge Cup match against a team like Queen of the South. It also depends on your interpretation of the said attendance. What is low and what is high? There is no real precedent for that competition but that kind of fixture in the early rounds of the League Cup wouldn't normally be high. I'm not sure what we can interpret from it. If it's a huge attendance, that will not mean Ally is completely endorsed and if there is a low attendance it doesn't say the fans have turned against him. -
Seems to me to be a way fort the current investors having their cake and eating it. They sell the new shares to the fans, get all their money back and still own most of the club... I'm all for putting money into Rangers but I'm more reluctant to just lining some investors' pockets.
-
Yeah, said properly, he's implying it wasn't the pitch, it was a hatchet job by one of his players...
-
I never said there was. However, it's usually far easier achieve a task by using ANY means, than to achieve it in the most stylish way - or the most ugly way. I think that's pretty self evident.
-
I think we all agree that you can play good football and win and we all want that the most, however some of realise that playing good football to win is not always possible. I can't remember Barcelona playing good football against us the last time. Some people also recognise that you have to set your priorities and focus on your goals. The goal is to win the game, not play pretty football. If you focus on pretty football you may succeed (although that is far easier said than done) but you are then missing the task of winning the game. I think the most obvious example of this is Tony Mowbray at Celtic (which seems to have been ignored) who came saying he was going to get Celtic back to playing good football. He concentrated on that, against teams with far less resources, and completely failed to win the title against a manager who was slagged off for his ugly football. The funny thing is that I don't remember Celtic playing much nice football at all. The thing is, every manager wants his team to go on the pitch and play wonderful football and winning comprehensively, all the players want that too. People are completely making stuff up like, “McCoist is ordering the players to hoof the ball at every opportunity”. Not only is this not even happening, it’s incredibly unlikely that Ally has told them this. He probably wants them to mostly keep it on the ground and put in the odd long ball to mix things up. However, when a defender is under pressure, one of his instincts is to hoof it to safety and when midfielders are frustrated by a park the bus defence and the clock is ticking down, they resort to the long ball just to get it forward. It happens at every level but the lower down you go in the skill ranks, the more likely the players will do this.
-
The comparison is to do with the fact that "nice" football is not always successful football and sometimes "ugly" football is successful. There is no huge correlation between "prettiness" and success or cause and effect that some people like to think there is. I thought my point was pretty obvious.
-
When you're not Rangers, there is more to being successful than winning trophies. Success is relative. I think you are knowledgeable enough to answer your own question.

I find Ally's comments in stark contrast to PLG's who pretty much ignored what was going on. You can't fix what you don't acknowledge and at least Ally and the players have done that. It's time for them to start making it up to us. -

26k is a massive attendance for a midweek cup game that's not on season books. It was the biggest in the UK and far bigger than many years in the past - and we were playing Falkirk after being relegated to the lowest league in Scottish football. I think it's amazing, and if we get over 20k for these games it will be some of the healthiest in our history. The fact is that we are playing well at Ibrox and pleasing the crowd, so what is there to stop them coming? If the away attendances dwindle, why should that affect Green? -
The impression by the press at the time was that Celtic played good football while we won the league through strength. Maybe you don't remember. Don't remember Wimbledon been renowned for great fooball during their most successful years... Wasn't Smith criticised on here for getting to the UEFA final with "awful" football. I remember Falkirk being praised for good football under Yogi, they were relegated. I don't go for arbitrary connections that don't agree with the real world. I never said that, but you do have a task to do - getting it done is the most important bit, getting it done to spare and with style is a bonus. If Ally wins the league by 10 points or more does that mean he's set the bar and gets your approval? One of our most famous title wins was by goal difference, did we just make do? I'm really struggling with your logic. What childish bit? I don't recall saying I know anything about you - bar what you write on here. All I did was interpret what you said yourself.
