  1. Walter Smith says the Scottish Premier League cannot extend the season to accommodate the number of fixtures that will have to be rescheduled. The Rangers manager says the SPL refused to extend the season when his side faced a backlog in 2007/08. Rangers had to play nine games in 24 days, including the finals of the Uefa Cup and the Scottish Cup. "Surely if the season's not going to be extended for one team, they can't extend it for any," said Smith. Rangers played two games after the final weekend of the SPL season in 07/08, against St Mirren on the Monday and Aberdeen on the Thursday. There was only one team going to benefit from the season not being extended then and that was Celtic Rangers manager Walter Smith But they lost the title race to rivals Celtic, whose chief executive Peter Lawwell had said an extension to the season would threaten the league's integrity. Smith, still irked by that scenario, said on Monday: "There was only one team going to benefit from the season not being extended then and that was Celtic. "So they refused to do it then, so they can't do it now. Is that not fairly straight-forward?" Smith admitted Rangers would be powerless to stop the SPL taking such a step this time, but said the club would be annoyed if it did happen. "I think that's probably all we can be isn't it, if they make the decision? But surely they can't make the decision after saying to us before that they can't extend the season," he added. Smith's squad has already been stretched this season as a result of injuries, and he has admitted it could become further stretched if they were to go on an extended Europa League run. 606: DEBATE Should the SPL extend the season to accommodate the fixture backlog? But while he acknowledged that an extension to this season could then help his side, he was adamant the SPL would not be able to justify it. "Of course it would be of benefit to us, and that would have been a benefit we would have accepted two years ago and we tried to get it, but they said no," he continued. "Much as we would like them to extend the season, we would have liked them to extend the season a couple of years ago, we would like them to extend the season if it's necessary. But they can't." Smith stressed that he does not feel the stage has yet been reached with regard to fixture backlog that an extension to the season is necessary in any case.
  2. A couple of quotes from Walter "Surely if the season's not going to be extended for one team, they can't extend it for any," "There was only one team going to benefit from the season not being extended then and that was Celtic. So they refused to do it then, so they can't do it now. Is that not fairly straight-forward?" "I think that's probably all we can be(annoyed) isn't it, if they make the decision? But surely they can't make the decision after saying to us before that they can't extend the season," "Of course it would be of benefit to us, and that would have been a benefit we would have accepted two years ago and we tried to get it, but they said no," "Much as we would like them to extend the season, we would have liked them to extend the season a couple of years ago, we would like them to extend the season if it's necessary. But they can't."
  3. Rangers manager Walter Smith believes the notion of a play-off to decide the Scottish league title is unrealistic. Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has suggested any league reconstruction plans could include a title play-off, similar to the Netherlands league. "Do you think that's fair? Of course it's not," said Smith. "There's an SPL strategy committee - I don't think that's their idea is it? Is it the idea of the people who are outwith that committee do you think?"
  4. Very true, but I thought that is what is going to happen with the up coming discussions,to look how the SPL can be improved. We may not be able to reduce ticket prices, but the fact remains that a lot of fans won't pay that amount of money to watch a poor standard of football, but it must be looked at all the same
  5. I also love the idea of standing sections, but that is not even up for debate in this country
  6. One thing about the Bundesliga is the price the fans pay,I'm convinced there are a lot of fans don't go to the game because of the prices we have to pay
  7. One of the men responsible for shaping the worldââ?¬â?¢s most successful football league has offered some advice to the SPL on its own day of destiny: less could mean more ââ?¬â?? both on and off the pitch. Holger Hieronymus has helped to make the Bundesliga the most-envied in the business with an 18-team set-up that does better box office than any on the planet. Yet, he firmly believes that the SPL could recover its long-lost European reputation by crunching its own numbers down to ten sides and could prompt a crowd boom like Germany by cutting admission prices for fans. The Bundesliga is the brand leader with a remarkable average crowd of 42,000. Full houses everywhere, the cheapest tickets, clubs who have debt under control, yet it still ensured that Germany were represented in last seasonââ?¬â?¢s Champions League final by Bayern Munich. Hieronymus knows what it takes to win the biggest honour in club football. He was part of the SV Hamburg side that won the European Cup in 1983 before injury propelled him into the business side of football and now he is deputy CEO of the DFL, the German league, which runs the Bundesliga. The 51-year-old recalls with clarity that Scotlandââ?¬â?¢s elite league produced teams that were among Europeââ?¬â?¢s best when he played when it had 10 teams, as Aberdeen and Dundee United emerged in the 1980s. ââ?¬Å?At Hamburg, we came up against Aberdeen a few times,ââ?¬Â Hieronymus said. ââ?¬Å?We knocked them out of the Uefa Cup when we got to the final in 1982, although we lost the first game in Aberdeen. They were a tough team and they won the Cup Winners Cup in 1983 and then they stopped us from winning the European Super Cup. ââ?¬Å?Yet that year they did not even the Scottish title. It was Dundee United, who, I remember, beat some of our top teams, like Werder Bremen and Borussia Moenchengladbach. That was obviously a good period for Scottish football. If Celtic and Rangers do not keep the success, it makes it more exciting. ââ?¬Å?I understand the problems Scotland faces because I used to speak a lot to my friend Lex Gold [the former SPL chief]. Football and money have to be balanced. If some people in Scotland want to go back to 16 or 18 teams, I would have to say that from the sporting aspect, the best way to improve the quality of your league is if the top teams are playing each other more often, than, for example, a weaker team in a bigger league. ââ?¬Å?You have to play on a special level domestically so you can compete when those teams reach European competition. Pressure is a good thing. The Bundesliga started with 16 teams and went to 20 but now we know 18 is the right number for us. Sometimes people say why donââ?¬â?¢t we copy England or Spain and expand but they have problems fitting in all the games when their teams are successful in Europe.ââ?¬Â The Bundesliga also has a winter-break, promotion-relegation play-off and Friday night football, three issues which were due to be up for debate by SPL clubs at Hampden today before it was called off due to severe weather. ââ?¬Å?We brought the play-offs in for 2008-09 between the third bottom team and the third best in Bundesliga 2,ââ?¬Â says Hieronymus. ââ?¬Å?The fans seem to like it because the games are a sellout.ââ?¬Â ââ?¬Ë?Sold outââ?¬â?¢ is a common message at Bundesliga grounds. Whether it is 80,000 watching leaders Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park or last-placed Moenchengladbach locking the doors with 50,000 inside, spectators cannot get enough of the product. The ticket prices are kept low by the clubs, and part of the reason for that is Germany still allows fans to stand. Hieronymus knows that sets off alarm bells in Britain ââ?¬â?? where all-seater stadia were created after the Heysel and Hillsborough Disasters ââ?¬â?? but offers some feedback, anyway. ââ?¬Å?The average ticket price in the Bundesliga is 20 euros,ââ?¬Â he says. ââ?¬Å?That is because all our stadia have special areas where fans can stand and it is very popular. The price there is maybe 13 euros. Those areas are very safe and so are our grounds. ââ?¬Å?That means the average price for the Bundesliga is probably cheaper than what people pay in Scotland and England. ââ?¬Å?I know that standing at football is a very political question in Britain. I know what happened in the past and that clubs from England were involved, not Scotland. I cannot say ââ?¬Ë?do thisââ?¬â?¢ because Britain is the way it is. ââ?¬Å?However, what I can say is that in Germany we have created an environment that really works. We have a lot of families at our games. The fans tell us they want to have standing areas and those supporters sing a lot and provide a great atmosphere. We even have people from England coming to watch lots of our games because they like much to such ââ?¬â?? and itââ?¬â?¢s cheaper.ââ?¬Â http://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/more-scottish-football/bundesliga-reconstruction-could-be-the-inspiration-for-change-in-scottish-game-1.1075388

  9. DUNDEE UNITED'S clash with Rangers is in jeopardy again after Tannadice was battered by fresh blizzards. United staff are working around the clock to get tomorrow night's SPL game on. And they may even ask fans to help clear snow from the stadium as they bid to avoid becoming the 68th game to be called off in Scotland so far this season. Celtic are also pulling out all the stops as they try to clear Parkhead for action against Kilmarnock tomorrow night after snowfalls in Glasgow . United have not played since November 20 and Rangers have played only one domestic match in the last month and fear an SPL fixture pile-up on top of their Europa League commitments. The game had already been postponed from November 28 as a result of the Arctic blasts that have hit Scotland recently - and could be called off again today. United chairman Stephen Thompson said: "We certainly want the game on because we haven't played for a month but we've just had four inches of snow. "We would appreciate help from the local council and may even ask for assistance from fans. "We'll know better in the morning. We'd like to think a decision on the game will be taken by Monday. "However, the forecast is for the very cold weather to continue." Celtic have also played just once in the last month, a 2-2 draw with Inverness Caley Thistle at home. A spokesman said: "At the moment, we stress the game goes ahead. But we will continue to monitor the situation very closely with the relevant authorities." Hamilton will know today if their game against at New Douglas Park on Wednesday has any chance of going ahead. Staff are working around the clock to repair a mains water pipe that burst on Saturday morning next to the club's electricity system. It forced the postponement of Hamilton's televised clash against the Hoops .
  10. MARVIN ANDREWS could never be accused of simply accepting defeat. After all, this is the guy who defied a cruciate-ligament injury to carry on playing for Rangers and eventually secure an SPL title in 2005. So it's no surprise that when he was warned by doctors he might never play again AFTER the knee surgery, the devout Christian put his faith in God and fought his way back to fitness. Now, after securing a move to Wrexham, the 34-year-old stopper wants to emulate current Rangers stopper Davie Weir by playing on until he's 40. The former Ibrox hero scored his first goal for the Welsh side against Mansfield a fortnight ago and he is set to stay at the Racecourse Ground until the end of the season at least. After unsuccessful spells at Hamilton Accies and Queen of the South, he's just delighted to be playing again, especially when medics told him his career could be over. He told MailSport: "I just thank God I'm still able to play. After the injury I had, people were convinced that was it for me. Everyone thought I wouldn't come back. "But I'm so grateful my knee is OK after the operation. "The doctors said I probably wouldn't play again but I've worked hard and now I'm back on the pitch. "I'm now fully fit with no injury problems. I'm not disappointed that I wasn't given the chance to stay in Scotland. "If God wants me in Scotland again, I'll be back. I believe I can play until I'm 40 years of age. "I've watched David Weir look after himself so well and do well up at Rangers. Hopefully I can do the same. "If I can stay away from any serious injuries I plan to play until 40 then call it a day. I still have a lot to offer in my career and still want to achieve things. "There's no reason why I can't play at a good level for the next few years. Sol Campbell is 36 but he's back in the Premier League at Newcastle. "It's about your belief and desire, which I have a lot of, so it's more than possible. "Weir is a real role model for me. He's a great example to people like me and it's incredible that he's still at the top level with Rangers at 40. "He has been fantastic in the Champions League and also when representing his country. Why can't I do the same? "We live in a society where lots of people think if you're over the age of 30 you're suddenly too old to do things. "However, Davie's out there showing it's not about age, it's about your mindset. "I have the same drive as him, I still want to play for as long as I possibly can. "It can be done and Davie's someone I look up to now." Andrews is enjoying life in the Conference with Dean Saunders' side but hasn't ruled out a return to Scotland - where he has spent the bulk of his career at Raith Rovers, Livingston and Gers. He became a cult figure under Alex McLeish at Ibrox and won the championship in 2005, having already lifted the League Cup with Livi the previous year. And the 101-cap defender still dreams of completing a glorious trophy treble by one day getting his hands on the Scottish Cup at Hampden. He said: "It's only five years since I was winning the SPL title with Rangers. Desire "But I look at guys such as Michael Ball and Dado Prso, who were my team-mates, and they aren't playing football now. "So I'm grateful still to be involved in the game I love. "I still have a burning desire to achieve more in the game before I retire. I'm fully fit again and plan to make the most of it now. "I want to win absolutely anything available at whatever club I might be at. I still have a real desire to win the Scottish Cup because it's the only medal I don't have from my time in Scotland. "There is still time left, I might come back and lift the Cup yet. "That's my dream and anything is possible in life if you believe in it strongly enough. "I'm signed to Wrexham until January but the club plan to extend it. Everything is going well and I'd like to be here until the end of the season. "My big mate Dennis Lawrence played here for five years. The manager found out I was a free agent and asked me to come down and see the place. "I've played my whole career in Scotland but I thought at this stage, why not try England? "I'm enjoying it just as much as I enjoyed Scotland. The main thing was to get back playing football - when I'm doing that I always have a big simile on my face."
  11. SCOTTISH football could change forever with plans for money-spinning play-offs in the SPL. Representatives of Hearts, Kilmarnock and Dundee United have secretly discussed ground-breaking proposals to bring the format to the top FOUR teams in Scotland. SunSport can reveal their sensational plans would mean the team who finished top of the league WOULDN'T automatically be crowned champions. Instead, there would be two-legged semi-finals between first and fourth and second and third, before a glittering winner-takes-all Hampden showdown. The men behind the plan - which they believe will be worth at LEAST £4million per season - had hoped to table the sensational plans at today's SPL summit which was postponed due to the weather. Last night an SPL insider revealed the top-secret proposals United, Killie and Hearts believe will smash the Old Firm's football stranglehold. A source said: "This has only come to the fore in the last 48 hours but the implications are MASSIVE. "The league propose play-offs at the bottom but is that really going to float the boat of the broadcasters or fans? "If you do it at the bottom, why not the top? It's radical and people will initially assume it's madcap. The people involved say it's anything but." The minds behind the controversial system acknowledge the Old Firm are likely to be against it. They believe that's exactly why EVERY other club will back the move. They have calculated all five play-off games would attract a total of 200,000 fans, with gate receipts totalling £4m. That's before any broadcasting deal to show the play-offs would be struck. Going by last season's final SPL table, Walter Smith's champs Rangers, Celtic, Dundee United and Hibs would all have been involved. A source said: "There isn't a reason why anyone outside the Old Firm SHOULDN'T vote for this. They've nothing to lose." Dundee United chief Stephen Thompson admitted he was in favour of play-offs at the top end of the table. He said: "The proposals that have been put to us contain a lot of decent ideas and a lot of good things have been tabled. "However, if there is to be a 10-team league - and I still do not think that is right from a purely footballing sense - why can't it be more radical? "I strongly believe that fans of teams outwith the Old Firm have become fed up of those two sharing the title between them. "It is incredible and extremely regrettable that the last non-Old Firm title win was 25 years ago. "I think we need to go further and make things more interesting at the top of the table as well as having promotion/ relegation play-offs." 13. TEARFUL WAG Leah Shevlin last night told of her torment after love rat fianc© Allan McGregor was caught playing away from home again. The blonde model admitted she was devastated at snaps of the Rangers goalie kissing and fondling a mystery girl at his club's Christmas party. And she faces more agony today as our exclusive snaps show him locked in a steamy embrace with ANOTHER woman. Last night Leah, 28, said: "I'm heartbroken. I'm just really upset and want to be on my own." Our pictures show McGregor cosying up to a flirty blonde at an upmarket Manchester nightclub just weeks ago. He was spotted leaving exclusive Panacea with the girl in the early hours of the morning. And one reveller described how the 28-year-old keeper appeared to be besotted with the beauty. The clubber said: "It looked as if they knew each other because she certainly wasn't backwards in coming forward. They were very openly kissing and chatting. "He was in the booths at the back of the club and he didn't leave her side. "I saw him leave with the girl at about 1.30am and they were holding hands. Nobody went with them." The latest saucy pics of the shot-stopper come after yesterday's snaps of him in a raunchy clinch with a girl at Rangers' Christmas bash at Priva in Bournemouth, Dorset. Leah has always defended her relationship with the footballer insisting he is faithful - despite his womanising reputation. Yesterday McGregor's representatives declined to comment on either set of photographs. 14. SPORTING Lisbon keeper Rui Patricio last night taunted Rangers by claiming his side will be too hot to handle in their Europa League tie. The 22-year-old played in both legs against Walter Smith's men the last time the sides met in the UEFA Cup two years ago. But Patricio insists he's HAPPY to be facing Rangers again, despite losing to them in 2008. And he boasted that Paulo Sergio's side now have the firepower needed to blast their way past Gers. He said: "This is a good draw for Sporting. Rangers will be a complicated opponent but we will go through. "To play the second leg at home is a big positive for us, it gives us the chance to see out the tie. "Of course, we first of all need to get a good result in Glasgow. "Rangers are the Scottish champions and arrive in the Europa League straight from the Champions League. "That is to their credit but if you analyse the two squads Sporting are far better in attack. "In Europe today, the teams who try to create chances tend to get success. Rangers are powerful in defence and they will try to destroy the game. "But I've watched them and I don't see them creating many chances. As long as we play a practical game in Glasgow we will qualify."
  15. A SECOND email making jokes about child abuse will reignite civil war at the Scottish Football Association, we can reveal. At an appeal on Wednesday, staff sacked for passing on an email about the Pope will claim bosses laughed at an even more offensive message. One source said: "They are furious and think they are the scapegoats for this. The SFA tried to make it look as if they have acted decisively but it seems they have opened a huge can of worms instead. "If it's proved that this second email has circulated between other staff, some of them very senior, it's hardly fair." Union officials acting for four workers axed in the wake of the Dallasgate controversy will make the shock claims at appeal hearings this week. Secretary Amanda McDonald, audio-visual technician Tim Berridge, mailroom manager Bob Bryan and administrative assistant Marco McIntyre were dismissed from the SFA along with referees' chief Hugh Dallas. After their dismissal, SFA president George Peat said he only learned of the sackings in the media, adding: "I wasn't in the office." SFA sources said they were punished because they had sent a notorious email about the Pope's visit to Scotland - which branded him a danger to children - to people outwith the Hampden HQ. But now the workers claim a spoof video advertising a repel lent spray to protect youngsters from paedophile priests was widely circulated and viewed within the SFA. McDonald, Berridge and McIntyre will be accompanied by their GMB union reps when they begin an appeal at Hampden on Wednesday. They will draw attention to a US web clip made by comedy website National Banana. It features a young boy who suffers a sex attack by a priest but is then protected by "Priest Off " spray. The clip starts with the boy returning from a Catholic camp where he has been abused by a priest. His parents then laugh at the idea of reporting the abuse to Church authorities because of their reputation for covering up abuse. The video then turns to a spoof TV ad for the spray, which "works just like insect spray". After being sprayed with Priest Off , the child repels the clergy. It ends with a priest being struck by a lightning bolt. One source said: "They believe they have been treated unfairly because this video went round other staff - including two senior guys - with no consequences. It's also thought they have evidence of similar material joking about the abuse of children by priests circulating between senior SFA figures. "Dallas will hear whether his appeal against dismissal was successful tomorrow. Another source said: "Whatever the outcome of his appeal, it could be a guide as to what might happen with the other three. "They're not going away quietly. They believe that there is serious hypocrisy in the way they have been treated. They believe their punishment didn't fit the 'crime'. They want their jobs back." A Catholic Church spokesman said: "It's important that an employer who has an acceptable use policy applies it consistently. You can't have one rule for one group and a different rule for others." An SFA spokesman said: "We are not in a position to comment on a live case." 'JOKE' EMAILS PROVE A GROWING PROBLEM Lawyers are facing a deluge of cases involving employees sending controversial emails from work accounts. Laura Salmond, of Glasgow solicitors Levy & McRae, said: "More and more employers are putting policies in place which state that forwarding questionable emails is a disciplinary offence. "Disciplinary action over this sort of thing is becoming increasingly common, not just with emails but also with social media like Facebook." Solicitor Austin Lafferty said: "People could be breaking their contract of employment, even if it's an innocent joke in good taste, because it's wasting time." Salmond added: "People need to be aware of the potential consequences of their actions. "If anyone receives an email they're not sure about, they should bring it to the attention of management or delete it." http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/2010/12/19/scottish-football-association-chiefs-accused-over-second-child-abuse-spoof-86908-22794328/
  16. Blue Square, the bookmaking firm who reported suspicious betting activity on the Motherwell versus Hearts game on Tuesday evening, have contacted the Scottish Premier League to tell them that there is more to the controversial business of Steve Jennings's red card than is currently in the public domain. On the day of the match, one individual, based in the Liverpool area, opened a new account with Blue Square and had two separate £100 bets on Motherwell receiving a red card in the game. He then attempted to have further bets on the red card, only to find that the firm's online filter system denied him the opportunity. Scotland on Sunday has learned that other bookmaking firms reported irregular activity on the Motherwell red card market on Tuesday, William Hill, Sky Bet and Ladbrokes among them. Blue Square, however, were able to monitor the punter's activity and became suspicious when Motherwell's Jennings was sent-off late in the match for foul and abusive language directed at referee Steve O'Reilly. "We've been criticised by some people for raising the issue of what might have gone on during that match," said Blue Square's spokesman, Alan Alger. "But what I want to emphasise is that this is not something we have just done on a whim because we want a whinge. We don't do things like this lightly. We've investigated the way the bets were placed and after 12 years in the betting industry I know what looks suspicious. We were alerted by certain things and I spoke to the SPL to tell them that we have extra evidence, that we have found X and that is why we're pursuing it. We can't release the details because that might jeopardise the investigation. "I know people are wanting to rally around the player and the club, but having heard Blue Square being criticised I wanted to say categorically that we wouldn't have taken it this far had we not had extra information, which we have brought to the attention of the Gambling Commission." Asked if the extra information had anything to do with a link between the gambler and the player, Alger wouldn't comment. "What I will say is that we're happy that we have enough of a case to bring this to the next level," he said. Motherwell remain steadfast in the defence of Jennings, describing it as ludicrous that he was involved in anything untoward. http://scotlandonsunday.scotsman.com/sport/Bookies-tell-SPL-of-39extra.6665455.jp
  17. Aye,think they need to win 9-0 or something daft, however they can move equal on pts and that would do for me
  18. Providing the BHEASTS don't have a tour of Japan it's a good reason for extending the season
  19. I was wondering why the likes of ESPN don't switch the live game to the Hertz v ICT,I know there will be obvious legal issues, but with so many games being off you would think they would want to show any game and this one has the potential to be a decent game with both of them on form and sittng 3rd & 4th in the league
  20. Tis a conspiracy I tell ye:smile:
