RANGERS Football Club picked up a coveted accolade at a top awards bash in Glasgow last night for its educational work in the community. The Club's Study Support Centre, and various other educational initiatives organised via Rangers Football In the Community and The Rangers Charity Foundation, was recognised with a 'Big Tick' at the Scottish Business in the Community Awards ceremony. Dominic Sharkey (left) collects award for Rangers Study Support CentreThe Awards for Excellence, which are supported by the Scottish Government, are the most rigorous awards recognising responsible business practice in the UK today and winners have to demonstrate a strategic and long-term approach to creating partnerships which have a measurable and enduring impact. The ground breaking Rangers Study Support Centre was launched in November 2001 and has since inspired thousands of children from across the city, with over 140,000 separate visits being made to the Centre to date. The quarter of a million pound facility was the first of its kind in Scotland and uses football as a vehicle to stimulate and motivate young people to learn. It aims to develop literacy, numeracy and IT skills, as well as develop confidence, self-esteem and motivation. Staffed by qualified teachers, the Centre has developed a curricular designed to enhance and complement the young people's school work while also presenting them with new and exciting ways of learning. Through debating sessions, interviews with players and tutorials in football business and marketing, students are encouraged to think for themselves and enjoy an exciting, proactive learning experience outside the usual classroom environment. In addition to its educational focus, the Centre also runs a series of dance classes to promote health and fitness and offers workshops to tackle issues such as social equality, fair play and sectarianism. Study Support Centre Rangers Chief Executive Martin Bain commented, "Rangers Football Club is delighted to receive this coveted recognition for our work in the community and our investment in the education of future generations via our Study Support Centre and other educational initiatives. "Football has the power to capture the imagination of young people and by harnessing their interest and increasing motivation the Club and Glasgow City Council Education Services have really helped them reach their potential. "The results the Centre has achieved have been staggering and along with our other projects via the Rangers Charity Foundation and Football in the Community, have made a lasting impact on young people in Scotland." Samantha Barber, CEO of Scottish Business In the Community said: "Corporate responsibility - the willingness of companies to go beyond what is expected of them to contribute to building a sustainable Scotland - is powerful and can have a definite and positive impact on our society."

I've always been of the opinion that he would/could do as good,if not better, job as Cousin & JCD.
-
I hope he gets backing from the fans if he signs, which looks likely,he isn't a popular signing but I would still like to think the Rangers fans will get behind him,as with all players, wether they think he should sign or not
-
But it's easier to attract players to the EPL,regardless of what you pay them,no doubt there are bargains out there, but do you honestly think the players you have mentioned would come to the SPL ?

Wonder what UEFA will do regarding giving thier place to another team ........................Rangers............. http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11945_3648676,00.html

But it also frees up his wages, although I agree with your point

Aaron Ramsey from Cardiff

Tottenham will move to sign Rangers goalkeeper Alan McGregor for £9m. (Daily Express)
-
He is still a young player, time to work on his game I think. Also I wasn't saying he'd be my first choice in CM,just that any player deserves to be given a run in thier correct position,a fair chance, before they get moved on

Agreed 100%
-
I honestly think Adam can give a lot more from the centre,as this is his natural position,he has enough creativity and can strike a great ball
-
Not for me,as has been said already we play them enough
-
One thing about KM,IMO,he will offer you as much as Cousin and JCD will if not more.

RANGERS manager Walter Smith looks set to be handed just £3million to rebuild Rangers this summer. That's the shock news which will stun the Ibrox club's supporters after a season in which Smith's shoestring side landed the two domestic cups, went within touching distance of winning the SPL title and reached the UEFA Cup Final. The amazing run to Manchester, plus their adventures in the Champions League, meant Rangers banked more than £20m from the campaign. However, I understand Smith has been told there will be no big cheques available to him after he insisted that he was looking for quality rather than quantity this summer. In the last twelve months, Smith has spent £11m but has also balanced the transfer budget books by selling Scotland full-back Alan Hutton to Tottenham Hotspur for £9m halfway through the campaign. Now, according to chairman Sir David Murray, the same sort of cash will be made available to the Ibrox boss this time around. Which means, unless he sells some of his best players, Smith will be unable to splash out more than £3m at the very most. That sort of fee is already earmarked for Fulham's Northern Ireland midfielder Steve Davis, who has impressed since arriving on loan in January. However, Smith hopes Fulham still want striker Daniel Cousin, whose January move to Craven Cottage was strangled by FIFA red tape, as that would amount to a straight swap. But he knows he needs another top-class central defender to partner Carlos Cuellar, as well as another midfielder - with West Brom's Jonathon Greening one player under consideration (see below) - particularly if Brahim Hemdani goes. Smith, though, could be on the brin of spending a chunk of his budget on Scotland striker Kenny Miller who looks set to complete a controversial £1.9m switch from Derby County this week. Milller only moved to the East Midlands last August in a £3m transfer from Celtic. It is a signing that will not go down well with a section of the Rangers support, who have have been singing derogatory songs about Miller - who played 30 times for the club back in 2000-01 - since the move was mooted. Ideally, Smith wants to bring in another striker to provide even more competition for Miller, Kris Boyd and Jean-Claude Darcheville. In contrast, Celtic boss Gordon Strachan is set to be given a larger warchest as the Hoops attempt to make it four SPL titles in a row. They can also bank on another £10m thanks to their direct entry to the Champions League group stage, meaning boss Strachan doesn't have any early-season qualification clashes for the glamour competition. © 2008 Mirror Group Ltd. Jun 1 2008 Exclusive By Scott Mcdermott SPANISH star Carlos Cuellar is ready to commit himself to Rangers by signing a new long-term deal. The SPL Player of the Year has been a revelation in Glasgow since his s2.4million transfer from La Liga side Osasuna last summer. Despite Gers' dramatic collapse in the title race and defeat in the UEFA Cup Final, Cuellar has been outstanding for Walter Smith's side. His form has attracted the attention of Newcastle United as well as a host of Italian and Spanish outfits. But the 26-year-old's agent last night told MailSport there has been NO contact or official bid from any club. And Pedro Bravo hinted his client is so settled in Scotland he'd be willing to extend his current contract which expires in 2011. Bravo is adamant the only way Cuellar will leave is if chief executive Martin Bain receives a bid Gers can't turn down - like the s9million Spurs splashed out to land right-back Alan Hutton. Bravo said: "I have heard all the rumours about Newcastle and teams in Italy or Spain wanting Carlos. "But I haven't heard anything official. There has been no contact or bid. "Carlos is happy in Glasgow and doesn't want to leave. The Rangers fans have been incredible with him. "I spoke to Martin Bain in Manchester at the UEFA Cup Final and told him how happy Carlos is. "He told me Rangers are not interested in selling and that was good enough for me. "The only way Carlos would leave is if Rangers received a bid they decide they can't refuse. Then Martin would have to talk with me and Carlos. "But if Rangers want to speak to us about extending Carlos' contract I will be on the first flight to Glasgow. "Carlos is on holiday at the moment but loves life in Scotland and would be keen to stay."

If the likes of Fleck,Effrem,Lennon ect start to get more involved then the likes of PL,KM won't be needed as they are a gamble,so i'd rather we gambled with the young players if we cannot get in some real quality.
-
If the budget is tight I would rather WS concentrated on buying attacking flair players.Yes we could do with a RB,CB and possibly a LB,but we really need players who are going to create chances so IMO midfield/forwards should be priority
-
What is WS transfer funds ?,if rumours are corrcect it's 10mill,if this is true then I don't think it's enough, how many quality players can we get for that ?.I really hope he gets more than than that to spend,we have had enough of signing mediocre players and I for one think the fans deserve to see some quality after too long watching average players pull on the Rangers FC jersey.I know our days of signing Laudrup,Gazza,Albertz and the likes are gone, and I also appreciate the fact that we need to keep our finances in order, but we have just had a financially successfull season and I think WS should be given a decent amount of money to bring the SPL title back home, also we the fans deserve a team worth watching and bragging about, especially so we can stick two fingers up to all the Rangers HATERS !!!!!!.Sir David Murray.................get yer finger oot and give WS some proper backing because WE ARE THE PEOPLE.

The same could be said about Miller !!!!

Jorg Albertz says Kenny Miller could be an Ibrox hit despite fan opposition May 31 2008 By David McCarthy JORG ALBERTZ never did realise his ambition to make a return to Rangers before hanging up his boots. The closest he got was a reunion with John Brown and Andy Goram at the end of last season when he helped keep Clyde afloat in the First Division. But the German, who left Ibrox with a heavy heart under Dick Advocaat in 2001, is watching with interest as two of his former teammates edge closer to pulling on a Rangers jersey for a second time. Kenny Miller will be almost certainly unveiled as a Rangers player for the second time in the near future, while Peter Lovenkrands is agitating for a return that would be more welcomed by the support than the Derby County striker's arrival. Then again they'd rather see Filip Sebo back than Miller, whose "crime" was to cross the city, play for Celtic and celebrate wildly scoring a goal against Rangers. Albertz knows all that and believes Miller will have his work cut out to win over the Rangers fans for a second time. But he trusts Walter Smith's judgment and claims if the manager believes Miller can be an asset the supporters should give him another chance. That said the 37-year-old can also understand the resentment felt by the support and while he acknowledges Miller's right to do what he likes with his career, Albertz insists he could never have signed for Celtic having played for Rangers. He said: "I wouldn't have gone to Celtic anyway. Not after playing for Rangers and being so accepted by their fans. "But when Kenny was at Wolves he got an offer from Celtic - and I don't mind saying they are a good club - and decided for football reasons it was the best thing for his career to go there. "That was his decision but I'm sorry, if you've played for Rangers you don't go to Celtic. That's my opinion. "Maybe these days things have changed a little bit and it is not the way it was in my time or the time before me. "But Walter has to look at getting good players in who can do the job for Rangers and have success again. "They won two cups but they must win the league next season. That must be the priority and if the manager thinks Kenny can help Rangers do that then his opinion has be trusted, where the player played for Celtic or not." However, Albertz believes Miller's industry and whole-hearted approach to the game can turn around the opinions of those who don't want him back at Ibrox. He added: "It will be difficult for Kenny, to be honest. He'll know the fans are unhappy but he has experienced that before when it took him a long time to be accepted by the Celtic supporters. "He'll have to do it again with Rangers. But if he performs well, shows the right attitude and gives everything for the club - which he should do - then maybe they will take to him again. "I played with Kenny and he is a talented player. In my time he was a young kid there but you could tell he had potential. He made great progress and is an established international player. "It's up to the gaffer, of course, if he thinks a player can help the team. And you also have to look at the money he has to spend as well. "If he can't spend a huge amount he has to look at players in his price range and if Kenny fits that why not go for him?" As for Lovenkrands, his former team-mate Albertz believes he is coming to the prime time in his career and Rangers could be the beneficiaries. The Dane was never universally acclaimed at Ibrox but in his six years he scored vital Champions League and Old Firm goals, ironically finding his best form in his last six months when being played through the middle. Lovenkrands moved to Schalke two years ago and after an initially successful spell in the Bundesliga he struggled to hold down a starting slot last term. Now the attacker, who has a Scottish wife, wants to return to Glasgow and Albertz believes the move could be beneficial to Rangers and the player. He said: "I played with Peter and everybody knows what he can give a team - genuine pace and the ability to score goals. "The problem at Schalke was he had an injury that kept him out for a long time and when he came back couldn't find his normal standard. "That meant he spent time on the bench and when Schalke got a new manager he didn't play Peter as much. Schalke are a big club with a talented squad so he found it hard to get back into the team and I'm not too surprised he is looking to leave. "I'm also not surprised to learn he is keen to go back to Rangers. They are that kind of club - once you have played there you know it is difficult to find anywhere better. He knows all about Rangers and like many others before him he has tried football somewhere else and now his first choice will be to return to Ibrox. "I've no doubt Peter could do a job for Rangers. He's definitely still got his pace and at 28 is just coming to the prime time in his career. "He has quality and is the kind of player who could play in any team because he is quick and knows how to score goals. "If he has space in front of him and someone like Barry Ferguson feeding him the ball he can hurt any defence because he is like lightning when he is through on goal. "You can't blame Peter for letting Walter know that he wants to come back!"
