Apparently we've knocked back a £3m bid for Wilson

Recommended Posts

It's just paper talk AFAIK, but apparently we're holding out for £5m. Hope it's true, as that would signal the return of some strength in the transfer market and send out a signal to clubs down south that we're not desperate for the scraps from their table.

No hitch in Liverpoolâs Wilson deal but Rangers want £5 million

According to reports on Thursday, the SPL club are holding out for an improved offer for their star defender.

Liverpool will have to pay £5 million if they want to sign Rangersâ young defender Danny Wilson. According to reports in the Daily Record on Thursday, the English Premier League side have been told they will not be able to sign the player for a fee below the Ibrox clubâs valuation.

It is said by the newspaper that Liverpool were prepared to pay £3 million for the Scottish playerâs services, having had a £2 million offer rejected earlier in May.

Rangers reportedly wonât accept any less than £5 million for their prized asset, who could leave for next to nothing in the summer of 2011 if no club matches his value this summer.

Wilson turned down a contract offer to stay in Glasgow as the season drew to a close. His current deal with the club is due to expire in the summer of 2011, meaning Rangers would receive only a nominal amount of training compensation in a years time.

It had been reported by some earlier in the week a hitch regarding the English top flights new limitations on squad sizes may have led to the Wilson deal collapsing altogether. However, STV Sports understanding is the ruling will have no impact on any possible transfer.

Introduced from next season, all clubs in the English Premier League have agreed to limit their player pools to 25, with eight of the players having to be classed as ââ?¬Ë?homegrownââ?¬â?¢. To qualify for that status, a player has to have spent a minimum of three years at any English or Welsh club while under the age of 21.

With Wilson still 18, Liverpool would be able to buy the central defender and, in three years time, have him as one of their ââ?¬Ë?homegrownââ?¬â?¢ players. But in the meantime, he would still be able to play for the club without affecting their quota, despite reports he would be would be classed as one of his prospective teamââ?¬â?¢s foreign players.

The rules of the new system stipulate that all players under the age of 21 are not included in the 25-man limit. Therefore, Liverpool can still sign and play Wilson without losing a spot for one of their clutch of overseas stars.

Even more crucially, having then spent three years on Merseyside, he would then be deemed as a ââ?¬Ë?homegrownââ?¬â?¢ player for the club upon his 21st birthday.

Problem is the latest news is both of his suitors have been put off by this transfer fee and are willing to wait till January and get him for £500k apparently.

.

It'll certainly be an epic fail if we did indeed knock back £3m then end up losing him on a free or for £500k.

This is good at least we are standing firm for once. Wilson could still sign a contract with us, he hasn't openly stated that I'm not going to sign. Although he has said he won't be pressured into a new deal ...

Liverpool want to present him as an own youth player. I don't know dates but Rangers probably know. If he reaches a certain age then he is a bought in player. I would think Rangers are playing on this.

The age, I think, is 1 pete. Until 21 he doesnt go against their 25 man quota - and at 21 he would qualify as home-grown.

I am very rusty on the subject so could be completely wrong.

Trying to agree a good fee for Wilson is vital. He doesn't want to stay here and he's also unlikely to be first choice next season anyway. Walter will not pick him ahead of Webster when Webster is 10 years older and on about £9000 more a week in wages

A couple of papers reporting today that the deal is off as Benitez has been told he needs to sell before he can buy as his budget for new players is very small, so he's not going to spend 5M on Wilson. Smith meanwhile is holding firm and saying that its a nonsense we would consider to let Wilson go for 3M when guys like Ramsey and Walcott go for much more while having less top team experience than Wilson.

If the Liverpool switch doesn't happen and his contract runs down, what happens then? I'm assuming he can't leave on a free because of the rules surrounding young players, but will the fee just be a nominal one?
