metlika 0 Posted February 8, 2011 Share Posted February 8, 2011 I'm not shooting this down because myself and Totti have disagreed on one or two things recently, I'm shooting it down because Walter Smith doesn't try radical alterations in his squad unless absolutely forced to. Naismith in midfield is one of the few examples where he was forced to play someone utterly out of position. Bougherra will stay in central defence no matter what happens with the squad as Walter is too stubborn to try new things. And tbf why would he play him in the holding role when we have Edu and Ness perfectly adept there? Gribz 743 Posted February 9, 2011 Share Posted February 9, 2011 I said last season Bougherra would be a better midfielder as he is strong and has great runs from the back. If we had Weir and Webster at the time playing well then Bougherra would have been a good option in midfield. But no way can we let him out the defence at the moment. Frankie 8,187 Posted February 9, 2011 Share Posted February 9, 2011 (edited) I don't think Bougherra has the touch and finesse required to play midfield... At the back, he can hoof it when required or, given the time and space, make a run forward. Meanwhile his strength and size make for a decent defender. I don't think playing him further forward would improve his contribution and would prefer to play Hutton there if we must use such a player. stewarty 1,879 Posted February 9, 2011 Share Posted February 9, 2011 Yep, fitness could potentially be an issue playing in midfield where stamina is more of a key requirement. Also, one of his key attributes is pace. Playing a holding role in midfield would largely negate that.
