If you sign Juan Manuel Ortiz, you'll struggle.

I'm as disappointed as the next man about the signings, form and standard of play. However, football's not just about individuals. It's a team game. We didn't get beaten by Maribor and Malmo because they had better players. We were beaten because they were better teams. Clubs in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and a host of small countries don't assemble squads that cost as much as ours, but they can give us a run for our money and make us look average.

Our problem is not about signings. It's about tactics, organisation and motivation. And team spirit and playing as a team.

Agreed. Coming to think about it those sides in Denmark, Norway and Sweden are fielding XI technically decent players who play together who are organised, motivated and know their tactics, while our problem (The SPL) is mixing a few technically good players with the rough and tough SPL players and the 2 just dont match. Thats probably a fundemental problem of the demise of Scottish Football....its like fielding two different 5-aside teams together and expecting them to do well while the opponents are 1 group of 10 outfield players. No wonder unknowns can beat the likes of Dundee utd and Motherwell year in year out and this season the OF.

Therefore its maybe a bit harsh blaming the foreigners all the time if they cant adapt to the style of play, they want to get the ball down an play yet have no chance of that when balls are just being punted up the park.

Going back to the 70s and 80s when Scottish sides were capable of going far in Europe the teams usually consisted of XI Scots who all had the same style, even our 1992/93 Euro run was mostly Scots.....The 3 foreigner rule was the first nail in the coffin in the Scottish game.

On the day.

Clubs in Norway and Sweden play summer football. We were some 3 weeks into pre-season, had one competitive game under our belt. Malm¶ - who is by default no pub team either, no matter how often our football experts want to tell us* - was 18 weeks into our season, so you would have to compare their fitness/sharpness levels to ours in November. But let's lay into our team, players, and management first and foremost. An easier entity to target ...

On a sidenote, clubs like Malm¶ and Maribor contribute to their countries' international squads throughout the seasons, as do we with Scotland and Northern Ireland. Had reporters and fans alike took a look at tables who matter, not relied on some illusionary feeling of greatness, they would have spotted Scotland and Northern Ireland at position 55 and 59 in the FIFA rankings respectively. Sweden and Slovenia are head and shoulders above "us" though, taking up places 18 and 23 on that list. Those figures don't tell you much about the clubs we play against, but they show that at a certain level Swedish and Slovenian football has to be superior than their British counterparts. At least at this day and age.
