Seven top-flight clubs don't think SPL could cope without Rangers

IT'S the question on the lips of every non-Bluenose – do we need Rangers?

IT'S the question on the lips of every non-Bluenose – do we need Rangers?

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell got the ball rolling the other day when he insisted the Parkhead club don’t depend on their bitter rivals.

But what about the others? Record Sport yesterday conducted a straw poll of a fans’ representatives from every SPL club and the majority delivered a resounding yes.

But there were a few dissenting voices, Dundee United included. Here goes . . .

Kilmarnock : Sandy Armour, chairman of Killie Supporters Association and member of Killie FC Trust. “Yes we do. I don’t want to see any club go out of the game.

“Scottish football is in a big enough mess without losing a club the size of Rangers. If they’re not here, there is a threat to the TV money and other clubs could go bust on the back of it.”

Dundee United : Mike Barile, representative from United Supporters Direct. “No we don’t need Rangers. We only need clubs that pay their taxes.”

Aberdeen : Kevin Stirling, Dons historian. “Absolutely yes, purely to maintain the rivalry. Outside the Old Firm game Aberdeen v Rangers is the country’s biggest fixture.”

St Johnstone : Gary McPherson, member of the Tulloch Institute Supporters Club. “Scottish football needs the Old Firm because of the income they bring in.

“If we didn’t have them, our game would become the equivalent of leagues in Wales or Ireland.”

Dunfermline : Margaret Ross, chairman of Pars Supporters’ Trust. “We need Rangers because of what they bring to Scottish football.

“The game would suffer, particularly in the west of Scotland, but also in the rest of the country.”

Inverness Caley Thistle : Don Johnstone, member of the Caley Supporters Trust. “We don’t need Rangers. Just as no player is bigger than any one club no individual club is bigger than any league.”

Motherwell : John Wilson, member of Well Supporters’ Trust. “It’s hard to feel sympathy after the mismanagement at Rangers but the financial vacuum would be huge and the provincial clubs need their supporters.”

Hearts : Derek Watson, chairman of Hearts Supporters Trust. “In the short term I would argue we do need Rangers because the alternative is to have a Celtic side so dominant it will be to the detriment of the Scottish game.

“However, in the long term I’m sure other sides would emerge as Dundee United and Aberdeen did in the 1980s.

“I don’t buy the argument we need Rangers for TV money because the bulk of it goes to the Old Firm anyway. Future deals may be less lucrative but it wouldn’t necessarily mean clubs like us, Hibs and United receive less than we do now.”

Hibernian : Mike Riley, chairman of the Hibs Supporters Association. “Yes, Scottish football needs Rangers and Celtic for the revenues, such as broadcasting, that they bring to the Scottish game.

“I would like to see Rangers survive, although it’s difficult to have sympathy given the ridiculous amounts they spent.

“Overall, it would be great to see the whole of Scottish football in good health, Rangers included. It would make our game all the better, from youth level right up to the full national team.”

Celtic : Peter Lawwell, chief executive. “We look after ourselves. We don’t rely on any other club. We’re very strong. We have a stand-alone strategy, a stand-alone financial plan and a robustness hopefully that will take us through.”

St Mirren : Stewart Gilmour, chairman.

“Yes we do, we need Rangers and Celtic because of the income they generate. They also have a huge fan base and provide competition for the other big clubs in the country.”

We believe that the stance taken by Rangers brings them into disrepute in respect of the Scottish Cup. We therefore call on the SFA to act strongly, in particular by stating that the normal competition rules in respect of an equal split of gate money do not apply in this case and that all revenues should be retained by Dundee United.

No worries Dundee Utd, keep the income from your 5,000 attendance, and I am sure that you will have no objection in Rangers keeping 100% of the income in the event of a replay at Ibrox where we will have 50,000 fans!

That slogan is spot on. Love it!

This Arab Trust mob are making us out to be the bad guys. Surely, we, as a club can do what we want when it comes to tickets? As far as I'm aware, we aren't breaking any laws by refusing our allocation.

Stay away lads, stay away.

Funnily enough, they weren't against boycotts as recently as the 4th of July 2012...................

"Almost 100% of ArabTRUST members polled stated that a newco application to the SPL should be refused and this was repeated in a similar exercise with Federation Clubs and the Business Club.

"Some 45% of those polled indicated that they would not purchase their season tickets if a newco was admitted. A further 16% indicated they were still undecided as to how a yes vote would affect their season ticket purchase.

Fans of other clubs are more concerned with us than their own club. Voting us out of the SPL would've been funny to other SPL club fans but they never thought of the long term.

Wankers!

So they fuck us over big style more than once but as soon as it affects them we've to move on for the sake of Scottish football and all help each other simple as that, it really is a shocking statement and so hypocritical but they can't see that.

Right so we have to forgive them for the 'past' but they want the SFA to yet again change the rules to punish Rangers for doing something we are perfectly entitled to?

Seems about right in Scottish football just now.

Love the 'Sink us' slogan. Just PERFECT.
