Mcgowan opens talks with gers

Recommended Posts

RANGERS have launched a bid to land Hearts star Ryan McGowan on a pre-contract.

The Light Blues, who are also keen to tie up a deal for Kilmarnock keeper Cammy Bell, have opened talks with McGowanâ??s representatives.

Manager Ally McCoist tried to land the defender in August but the deal fell apart on transfer deadline day when the Australian decided to stay at Tynecastle.

However, the versatile Jambo is now willing to drop into the lower leagues to make the move.

The 23-year-old, who has turned down a new contract at Hearts, initially claimed playing in the bottom division would damage his international ambitions but he has since been told he could still remain part of the Socceroos set-up if he joined Rangers.

McCoist has urged chief executive Charles Green to get a pre-contract tied up as he knows cash-strapped Hearts will try to bring some money in for him in this transfer window.

An un-named Chinese club have agreed a fee with Hearts for McGowan, but it is unlikely the defender would want to continue his career in the Far East. Championship clubs Sheffield Wednesday and Wolves are also interested, but Rangers have the added lure of already having his ex-Tynecastle colleagues Ian Black, David Templeton and Lee Wallace.Rangers could sign McGowan and field him as a trialist before officially registering him on September 1 when their year-long transfer embargo is lifted.

McCoist, who will have additional wages to strengthen his squad, is also set to open pre-contract talks with Bell, who has been another long-term target of the Rangers manager.

The 26-year-old Scotland squad keeper will come in to challenge Neil Alexander, although the current No 1 has still to sign an Ibrox contract extension beyond the summer.

If he lands McGowan and Bell, McCoist he will make a top-quality centre-half and centre-forward his priorities.

A guy on FF who is apparently McGowan's mate and several people are vouching for (he had all the right info regarding McGowan and Templeton during the summer transfer window) is saying he's off to China for 9 months until we can register him in September apparently.

I dont remember his posting from August/September time so can't add anything to what i've posted above and whether or not he is likely to be trustworthy.

Obviously, once he decides on a deal with us, he has to leave till it happens. Life in the SPL would probably be torment, home and away. That said, people can simply do this confidentially and no-one needs to know if a pre-contract is being signed.

Michael Grant

RANGERS did not attempt to reach a pre-contract agreement with Ryan McGowan before he decided on a move to China, according to the assistant manager Kenny McDowall.

Rangers tried to sign McGowan along with David Templeton in the summer and were linked with another attempt to get him from Hearts on a pre-contract agreement when the current window opened on Tuesday. Instead, the 23-year-old Australian will join the Chinese club Shandong Luneng Taishan.

After Rangers had beaten Annan Athletic 3-1 to win their 11th consecutive third division game yesterday, McDowall said no new approach had been made to McGowan. "It's not a secret that we tried to sign him before the transfer embargo came in so he's obviously a player we were interested in at that time. We haven't spoken to him at this moment in time."

Rangers are optimistic goalkeeper Neil Alexander will sign the new one-year contract on offer despite the player preferring a longer deal.

They will learn the extent of Darren Cole's ankle injury today. Cole, 20, made only his second start for Rangers but in the second half twisted the same ankle which had been hurt previously, keeping him out of the game for several months.

Annan's interim manager, Euan Brydson, praised Rangers for pulling so far ahead in the league after dropping early points. "Rangers now know what they are up against week in, week out. They have been at every ground and every team has shown a level of performance against them and they are working hard for everything."
