Rangers to learn SPL 'title stripping' investigation fate on Thursday

The result of an investigation which could result in Rangers being stripped of Scottish Premier League titles will be announced on Thursday.

An independent commission, chaired by Lord Nimmo Smith, has been looking at alleged rule breaches by the Ibrox club between 2000 and 2011.

It is alleged Rangers failed to correctly declare all payments made to players in documentation required by the league, breaking SPL rules.

The allegations are split into three distinct time periods from November 23, 2000 to May 21, 2002, May 22, 2002 to May, 22 2005 and May 23, 2005 to May 3, 2011.

Although a verdict is due for all three periods, only the latter six years could see rule breaches render players ineligible to have participated in matches. Rangers were SPL winners in 2002/03, 2004/05, 2008/09, 2009/10 and 2010/11.

The withdrawal of a title is one of 18 possible sanctions available to the commission, taken directly from the SPL's rulebook. Results could also be annulled, or a punishment such as a warning or fine imposed.

The situation is complicated by any sanction being applied to the Rangers oldco, which is now in liquidation, and not Charles Green's newco, which acquired the club's Scottish FA membership and is now participating in the Third Division.

The club's use of Employee Benefit Trusts relates to the inquiry, with the three-man panel having to rule on whether the payments were direct remuneration for playing football.

The majority verdict of a First Tier Tax Tribunal into the use of the scheme stated last year that the payments did not "amount to an emolument."

... a couple of interesting things that will annoy our friends at Pacific Quay. All in all, given previous rulings on such matters, the capital punishment would be ridiculous. In any case, I hope that Green and the RFFF can be hold to their words and fight the worst case scenario to the very end.

If they strip them the club should ignore this and still count them in our official history,

Juventus have done this to a degree this season.

They were stripped of 2 titles because of the match fixing scandal in Italy. They feel it was unjust. So when they won the title last season it would have taken them to 30 which would have meant a 3rd star above their badge instead of the officially recognised 28. So to celebrate it Juventus have put "30 sul campo" (30 on the Field) on their shirt under their badge this season
