Rangers advertising campaign being investigated ASA confirms

Recommended Posts

I note the address of 'the Drum' is, 26 Gallowgate.

These last 20 years, Glasgow City Council has ensured the bottom part of the Gallowgate is no longer a 600 year old flea market known as the Barras. No, it the world's premier Plastic Paddy Theme Park.

There's shit loads of them who are obsessed enough to pull sad stunts like this. Even the well known ones from their various websites and blogs who should really show more nonce and know better are sad enough and thick enough to get involved in nonsense like this because it's in their genes to obsess about Rangers.

I'm with Allan & Ian... it's totally hilarious. Horay for the loonball brigade!

Show more nonce? Deliberate slip?

The ASA will 'investigate' any complaint made to them, that's their job and reason for being. They will respond to any complaint with an assurance it'll be investigated and they will reply to the complainant once they've investigated. In every case they'll write to the advertiser (Rangers in this case) and ask them to prove the claim being disputed. So the 'fact' this is being 'investigated' means nothing, that's the procedure they follow.

If they are satisfied the advertiser has acted in good faith, not tried to mislead or gain commercial advantage they'll allow the advertisement, and any future ones, to stand. The only way they could rule against the club is if they believe Rangers cannot lay claim to the titles and trophies won by, erm, Rangers.

I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion all this is stuff is a form of mass psychological projection, Tims really just want to be us, it's killing them inside, making them do crazy cruel things. Freud would have field day with them.

That part of the world is weird, every pub has Irish flags on display the streets are filthy and the people who frequent it are boggin' beyond belief, it has a thriving prostitution market with really ugly women (and men) and drugs are rife - not a place you want to walk through at night.

Rangers stands firm over "Scotland's most successful club" claim as ASA investigates

Rangers has maintained that it is "Scotland's most successful football club" as the advertising campaign making the claim is probed by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

Earlier, the ASA confirmed to The Drum that it was investigating the radio and press campaign following 62 complaints about the claim by the club to be Scotland's most successful club.

James Traynor, director of communications for Rangers was in no doubt of the club's stance when he responded to The Drum's request for a reaction to the investigation.

He stated: “Rangers Football Club can confirm they have responded in full to this ridiculous claim and we know the Advertising Standards Authority will take the same view as the football authorities, the European Club Association (ECA), Lord Nimmo Smith and the panel of the London Stock Exchange. For the avoidance of doubt we stress again Rangers FC is Scotland’s most successful football club.”

The campaign ran following the liquidation of Rangers, which led to the new holding company being formed as a result and buying the assets to the club, before being accepted into the Third Division by the Scottish Football League. This has led to consternation among fans with many claiming the club to be the same as before, while many claim otherwise (see the comments here for example.)

As a result of the complaints received, the ASA will now have to determine whether Rangers are entitled to describe themselves as "Scotland's most successful club" or not, which could lead to the campaign being banned from running again featuring the claim should they rule against the club.
