STV on "reconstruction" for next season

Recommended Posts

Clubs in the Second and Third Division have been offered more money each season in a bid to push through league reconstruction plans.

Representatives from all 30 Scottish Football League sides met at Hampden on Friday to discuss a proposal tabled by the Scottish Premier League for changes to the setup in time for next season.

A four-team play-off between the top two tiers, improved financial distribution and a merger of both league bodies have all been put forward and were met with broad approval, although no vote was held.

"The meeting was hugely positive," Hamilton Academical chairman Les Gray told STV. "We have a gone a long way to completing the process in terms of getting league reconstruction through for next season.

"I am very optimistic it will be voted through. The First Division clubs may take a slight hit that would be allow for Second and Third Division clubs to benefit financially.

"The vote won't happen next week at the SFL's AGM. It is likely to be a week or so after that."

A vote of Scottish Premier League clubs could take place when they meet at Hampden on Monday.

A total of £1.5m was earmarked to be added to the total prize pot for second tier teams under previous league reconstruction plans.

A minor tweak was expected to be made to that to give more cash to the team finishing 11th in the top tier.

Second and Third Division clubs stood to make a combined £846,000, meaning no change from what they currently receive and share at the end of each season based on each team's final position.

STV understands that if both the SPL and SFL approve the plans, the new body would be formally up and running by June 27 this year.

Teams in the First Division were already firmly behind the proposal, having previously threatened to breakaway and attempt to join the SPL after reconstruction plans failed.

Gray added: "We were adamant we wanted change and it looks like we are going that way."

LEAGUE reconstruction plans remain on course for next season after Scottish Football League clubs reached unanimous agreement on a number of issues at a meeting at Hampden today.

The summit of all 30 clubs - including associate members Rangers, who do not have a vote - backed plans for a 42-club merger with the Scottish Premier League.

The discussions followed agreement by SPL clubs over revised plans, which would include a merged organisation, a 12-10-10-10 structure and top-flight play-offs.

The SFL will propose a different distribution model, which recognises the importance of the Second and Third Division clubs but will not involve the SPL giving up more money.

They have also put a different governance model to the SPL ahead of their meeting on Monday.

SFL clubs would likely be given 14 days notice of a formal vote on league reconstruction, with no date set as yet.

Chief executive David Longmuir said: “We are most definitely willing to continue with a 42-club solution to the league reconstruction process.

“We are going to work hard to bring this to fruition as quickly as we possibly can in the hope that what we deliver benefits the whole game in Scotland.

“There are a number of things that we got unanimity on today. We are going to initiate a process of due diligence to ensure we get to a place where we have a proper health check on any merged organisation to ensure there are no surprises.

“We agreed that the recommended financial distribution model that the SFL put to the SPL this week is going to take us forward and we got unanimous agreement that that was the will of the clubs.

“I know Neil Doncaster is putting it to his clubs on Monday and I hope that they look upon it as being a fair and appropriate way to spread what wealth we’ve got in the game.

“On governance, the initial governance model that was proposed, and seems still to be the favoured governance model, is not one that we wish to pursue.

“The governance model that the clubs, in unanimous fashion agreed to support, was the one that I previously put to the SPL, which is a 3-1-1-1 governance model, as opposed to a 3-2-1 governance model.

“This is a marvellous opportunity for everybody to get behind it. We are not far away.”

The main point is we should force them to renegotiate our TV rights with us. Without this everything else is dead in the water. Rangers must not subsidise the parasites of Scottish football any longer.

Can we do that though, Rab? Everyone seems to say that we don;t own them the league does. If that is the SFL's one bargaining chip then it will be used for them to get some deals from the SPL, not to benefit us. It will in effect be why the SPL want a "merger" (as they so euphemistically call this takeover) and condemn us to continue being our enemies, especially you know who's, financial support.

This has a bit of a way to go yet, due diligence should unearth some potential problems imo. The Sky contract is as yet unseen by anyone other then a select few of the corrupt cabal. Then there is the potential pending legal liabilities with the Harry Hood suing, who will pay the bill to Harper McLeod for the failed attempt to remove our titles. Do the SPL debts and liabilities attach themselves to all 42 clubs now with this merger?

the liabilities belong to the limited company (the SPL) and not the shareholders (the clubs)

I would be surprised if there weren't a few keen eyes being kept on what is happening as regards the SPL.

On another tack, the recent Hearts situation, the fact that there are apparently four Clubs with grave concerns and the imminent SPL vote makes me wonder if there's a wee bit more horse trading to be done yet within the SPL.

Do Dundee have a vote on Monday? Or is it now Thistle?

All quite interesting stuff. I've never in my life seen an organisation rip itself apart for self interest.

Can't wait to see how it pans out.
