Ibrox drama: Rangers bidder Jim McColl insists there will be no deals to keep chief executive Craig Mather at the club

THE Scots entrepreneur says there is no compromise on what he and the shareholders are demanding- the removal of Craig Mather, Brian Stockbridge and Bryan Smart.

JIM McCOLL last night spelled out his intention to topple the Ibrox board and insisted there will be no deals to keep chief executive Craig Mather.

The Scots entrepreneur spoke exclusively to Record Sport after another day of jostling for position in the Rangers power struggle.

McColl is fronting a shareholders’ revolt to overthrow Mather, financial director Brian Stockbridge and non-executive director Bryan Smart.

He has demanded seats on the board for Paul Murray and Frank Blin and had originally given the club a deadline of today to make the changes or face a bloodbath at an egm next month.

Yesterday, though, McColl agreed to put his requisition on hold until Tuesday in order to save costs by giving the club time to roll their agm and the egm into one October showdown.

But last night he shot down suggestions of a possible back-door deal with Mather and insisted there is no wriggle room for negotiations.

McColl said: “There will be no compromise on our part.

“The board has been unable to make the changes the shareholders wanted and the only reason we agreed to hold off is to adopt a common sense approach.

“It would cost around £80,000 to stage an egm next month. Then, two weeks later, there would be similar costs incurred by an agm.

“So this is our way to avoid wasting money. We are simply doubling it up into one meeting. But the demands remain the same.

“The motions we have already put forward, for the removal of Brian Stockbridge, Craig Mather and Bryan Smart and the appointments of Paul Murray and Frank Blin, will be presented on the same day in order to save costs.

“It’s a responsible approach but don’t get our message confused.

“What we are doing is not simply at the whim of a few individuals, there is a groundswell of investors, stakeholders and fans who are all demanding change.

“I’ve never seen such a strong desire.

“So I can’t sit down and do some deal with Craig Mather that will satisfy a few individuals.

“It has gone way beyond that. There is no mandate for compromise and there will be no compromise.

“The stakeholders have given us a mandate to stick with the motions put forward which is precisely what we are doing.”

The move to combine the meetings was agreed after Gers director James Easdale complained about the costs of the egm requisition.

Ironically, as this will be the Newco’s first ever agm, all directors, including Easdale and the other non-exec Ian Hart, will also face a shareholder vote in order to be re-elected.

In other words, Mather, Stockbridge, Smart, Easdale and Hart could all be obliterated in one afternoon if the club’s investors wish.

And although McColl is focusing solely on the terms of his original demands, he remains adamant radical change is required to secure the club’s future.

He added: “Walter Smith stated that this board is dysfunctional.

“Previous board members such as Phil Cartmell and Malcolm Murray have said the same. In a short period of time two chairmen have left and the broker has been changed.

“It’s clear that the institutional investors and the supporters will not tolerate any more of this boardroom chaos.

“We are determined to represent the feelings of shareholders and stakeholders. They want significant change.”

Mather tried to seal a compromise deal by stating on the club’s website that the board would accept Blin’s appointment.

But, crucially, he did not endorse Murray’s return nor did he offer to step down or force Stockbridge and Smart out of the boardroom.

None of this was acceptable to McColl, who said: “You have to ask why on earth these people wouldn’t want someone of Paul’s calibre around.

“I think I know the answer – because he will not accept anyone who puts themselves before Rangers.

“It’s not up to this board to cherry-pick who comes and who goes. The shareholders have decided what they want and so have the fans, in huge numbers.

“So they have no business in trying to isolate Paul. They know the changes they have to make and let’s be

clear, these changes are going to happen.

“We’ve already seen Charles Green go under strong protest from the fans’ groups.

“All we are saying here is go to a meeting, have a democratic vote and let’s see who wins.

“Why would you be afraid of that?

“All shareholders, big and small, will have a vote and what the majority wants the majority will get.”

McColl is talking nonsense when he say Paul Murray will not allow anyone to put themselves before Rangers, he let SDM do it for years without so much as a mutter of displeasure or discontent.

D murray was gone from rangers whe paul arrived in all but a physical sense.

Yeah, Paul Murray didn't even get appointed onto the board until 2007.
