If there was any kind of journalistic integrity left in Scotland Peter Lawell would be in front of a camera explaining why a convicted violent thug has seemingly been rewarded by the club despite promises that those who so publicly shamed the club would be banned.

Celtic fan convicted of rioting in Amsterdam takes VIP tour of Parkhead with Dutch lawyer planning his appeal

5 Dec 2013 08:44

PADRAIG MULLAN is appealing a two-month prison sentence - claiming he was trying to protect his partner when he was set upon by a gang of plainclothes police.

A CELTIC fan convicted of rioting in Amsterdam got a behind-the-scenes tour of Celtic Park... after a summit with the lawyer fighting to keep him out of jail.

Padraig Mullan is appealing a two-month prison sentence after supporters and plainclothes police clashed before the Champions League match against Ajax.

Mullan, 28, of Belfast, claimed he was protecting his partner Dawn McAnoy when he was set upon by a gang of plainclothes police.

But he was sentenced to two months in jail last month after a Dutch judge found him guilty of assaulting an officer.

Damian Dobbin, 23, Thomas Kennedy, 30, Andrew Vance, 21 and Joe MacPherson, 20 also got jail terms. All five were released to allow an appeal.

On Tuesday, Mullan visited Parkhead with his Dutch advocate Christian Visser after a meeting with his co-accused.

Visser said he had been in Glasgow to meet the convicted supporters and arrange their upcoming appeal. He and Mullan were given a tour of Celtic Park by the club’s supporters’ liaison officer.

It was organised by Eddie Toner of the Fans Against Criminalisation group and Celtic Trust chairwoman Jeanette Findlay.

Visser said: “I had a guided tour of the ground with Padraig. It was very nice and it’s a great stadium.

“People from the Celtic Trust were there to help us and during the tour we spoke to someone from the club – the supporters liaison officer.”

The club and Scottish police are taking no action against the fans while they appeal. Visser said all the supporters protested their innocence and were determined to carry on with the case, even though the appeal process could take a year.

Celtic have not been involved in any of the legal proceedings around the fans’ appeals. But last month, our sister paper the Sunday Mail revealed that the club had hired Dutch lawyers to act for 25 other fans who blame local police for the trouble.

A Celtic FC spokesman declined to comment on Mullan’s tour of the stadium.

This is beyond parody. If this guy got the red carpet treatment from the Celtic Trust and a guided tour then just think what all those Green Brigade bhoys will be expecting, A tour and a free season ticket at the very least.

If Celtic do not publicly dissociate themselves from this arsewipe then they are a disgrace.

They are a hardline Irish Republican Club many of whose pond life supporters such as him openly support banned terrorist organisations. That is the identity they have chosen and must live with. I just don't want this club or it's 'supporters' in this country as I cannot see how they belong here. The problem is that their chosen country, Ireland, probably wouldn't want them either and the spineless politicians ,media and authorities in this country are unwilling to challenge them on these issues.

Most of them are in full support of them sadly.
