Wallace willing to work with Rangers hopefuls

Recommended Posts

Rangers chief executive Graham Wallace says that he would have no problem working with any of the four boardroom hopefuls who are seeking election at the club’s annual general meeting.

Former chairman Malcolm Murray and allies Paul Murray, Scott Murdoch and Alex Wilson have been seeking support for their appointments and the removal of current board members, especially finance director Brian Stockbridge.

Recently-appointed chairman David Somers spoke scathingly of the quartet on Saturday but Wallace was more conciliatory as he seeks the stability required to move the club forward. Wallace, who was appointed on November 20, told Sky Sports News: “If the requisitioners, any one of them, were to be voted on to the board, that’s the will of the shareholders. Should that be the will of the shareholders, as a professional businessman, I would be absolutely willing to work with whoever is appointed.”

Next Thursday’s meeting comes after a long campaign for change by the Murrays, which included successful court action in October to force the postponement of the AGM and a vote on their potential appointments. That victory sparked several departures and Wallace, Somers and Norman Crighton have since joined Stockbridge and James Easdale on the PLC board. Wallace, a former chief operating officer at Manchester City, is hoping the vote draws a line under the upheaval.

“The club needs stability, it needs the platform to move forward,” said the Dumfries-born businessman, who refuted rumours that former chief executive Charles Green or former owner Craig Whyte may be involved in running the club.

“There has been a lot of conversations on the relative merits of particular campaigns and particular areas of interest to individuals. What I’m concerned about is having the stability and opportunity to be able to take the club forward. We need to have that mandate to move the club forward. We will have a wide range of supporters engaging with us in the run-up to the AGM. They want to know the club is in good hands, they want to know that the people in the boardroom have the interests of Rangers at heart. And I can categorically give them that assurance sitting from the CEO’s chair. My focus is 100 per cent to drive this club forward.”

Paul Murray has previously acknowledged the attributes of Wallace and had no problem with his appointment, but he urged shareholders to vote for him and his allies to bring trust to the Ibrox boardroom.

Murray, who was a director of oldco Rangers before being removed by Whyte following his takeover in May 2011, said: “We are not saying that the whole board has to be ousted. We want the best board to take the club forward. I think the most important thing after the last two and a half years is trust and transparency. People have to trust the people on the board and that has actually broken down in the last two and a half years.

“We have a couple of individuals on the board who have been there for most of the last 12 months and we have made our views clear on them in terms of the lack of stewardship and financial mismanagement.

“There have been three new directors appointed in the last month and we think, certainly Graham Wallace, looks like a credible individual.

“We have to ask the question: who appointed these individuals and why would they want to join the board at this time?”

Rangers chief: We must listen to our fans

RANGERS chief executive Graham Wallace today admitted the Ibrox club needs to listen to its supporters more in the future.

Wallace's comments came after the fans' group that arranged the meeting with major shareholder Laxey Partners this week issued a warning.

The London branch of the Rangers Supporters' Association has revealed they will consider not renewing season tickets if the current board survive the AGM next week.

Their actions will not adversely affect the finances of the SPFL League One leaders greatly due to the size of the organisation.

But the announcement comes the week after the three main Rangers supporters' groups, the Assembly, the Association and the Trust, threatened to "disengage" with the club.

And it gives a clear indication of the strength of feeling that exists among many of the Light Blues faithful about how their club is currently being run.

A London RFCSA statement read: "We are concerned that he (Laxey director Colin Kingsnorth) would not consider using his vote at the AGM to restructure the board.

"The overwhelming majority of Rangers supporters want change in the boardroom to restore our faith in the men who have stewardship over our club."

Wallace, meanwhile, has conceded Rangers have not engaged with their customers enough in his first interview since being appointed club chief executive.

He said: "Fans are the lifeblood, absolute lifeblood. We have a very significant fan base locally as well as globally. They have a loud voice and it's right that the club should listen to that voice.

"I think it's something in the past that we perhaps haven't done as well as we need to. And certainly it's part of my

philosophy is to engage with a wider fan base to understand the issues that matter to them so that we as a club can understand."

Wallace, the former Manchester City chief operating officer, stressed that making the team successful on the park is his top priority.

He said: "I think the key areas for us are to have the club performing well on the field because it is all about the football.

"That then allows us at a commercial level to be able to grow the business. And we absolutely need to be able to grow that corportate level, the right level of long term partnerships that then allow us to fund the ongoing developments in the club."

He shoukd be actively recruiting at least two of them.

Don't think he should be recruiting people for the sake of it.

Would be better off recruiting a fan representative and putting them on the board, if you are getting that it will ease the fans thoughts.

As has been demonstrated in the past....that all depends on WHO that representative is!!! If not the right person, it could create further/deeper divisions in the support.

For now we need stability in the boardroom, then talk about fan involvement at a later date.

The requisitioners all have vast experience. Easily outweighing our current board members.

"vast experience" in what???

PM is effectively the only one with practical experience of a football club, and even then no-one is sure what he actually did. MM was involved previously, but going by his account of his time in office, he was unable to do ANYTHING constructive. From what I know of Wilson & Murdoch, they have zero experience running a football club.

With the current board, only GW has had experience running a football club (some wee provincial team in Manchester...) & by all accounts he did a good job. With regard to specific football experience, the other board members are in the same boat as Wilson & Murdoch. However, based on their business background posted in another thread, Somers, Crichton & Easdale all appear to have a more successful track record.

What specific skills do the Murrays, Murdoch & Wilson bring to the table that the current board don't offer????
