NO large surfer banners allowed into Easter Rd on Sunday (confirmed by RFC)

Recommended Posts

As Zappa says, it'll be about size, not content.

Great banner though.

TBH, I think it's highly questionable whether it's about either size or content mate.

How often do the goon brigade have their massive banners disallowed even although many/most of them aren't even fit to pass the fire & safety rules with certificates? Their home made four horsemen banner was maybe 3 or 4 times the size of this Bridgeton Loyal one and they've had numerous other big ones in recent times which were not only offensive, but home made and uncertified.

I hope the Bridgeton Loyal bus either get the Club to sort it out or just manage to get it in and fly it because someone (or certain people) at Police Scotland are probably just taking the piss.

Bit perverse that Police Scotland charge football clubs (or organisers) top dollar for their fine officers, and even go to the length of dictating how many fine officers there should be.

Then they also dictate things such as size of flags etc.

However, it is Police Scotland. By that I mean there is one Police Force in Scotland.

Therefore their policy for size of banners etc should be consistent across the nation, and should be in some form of guidance. That is, rules for Sunday should be consistent with rules for Parkhead etc.

If not, does it mean they're making up the rules as they go along.

An FOI would answer the question.

The Rangers Supporters Trust (RST) is dismayed by the news that Police Scotland may not allow large flags into the Ramsdens cup final on Sunday at Easter Road. There is already a ban on alcohol in public, something which does not happen when the rugby is played at Murrayfield, or at the Edinburgh derby. Once more, Rangers fans are being criminalised through no fault of their own.

The unprecedented decision to refuse entry with large flags on the basis that it can be used to hide pyro seems redundant given that special sniffer dogs will be on duty to stop any pyro from entering the stadium. This decision by Police Scotland will cost supporters clubs money. Bridgeton Loyal recently spent a substantial amount of money on a new flag for the game which is now not allowed and there are no doubt others in the same position.

The RST urges Police Scotland to allow common sense to prevail and engage in dialogue with fans and the club to allow supporters to enjoy the day in a safe and sensible manner, and allow flags into the game.

I'm glad this has been raised publicly. The attitude of the police is more antagonistic than helpful.

On the either side of the coin, I hope the pyro pranksters realise that their actions have contributed to this sad state of affairs.

I've been following this story for several days now and some absolutely disgraceful news broke earlier tonight after a week of discussions between the Bridgeton Loyal RSC, David Martin, the Head of Security at Rangers and someone (or certain people) at Police Scotland.

This was set to be the very first display of the Bridgeton Loyal RSC's new banner and it's a sickening development for them because not only was it professionally manufactured by footballflags.co.uk and fully certified to meet fire & safety regulations, but it cost their Supporters Club in excess of £1000.

However, despite the banner being professionally made, perfectly legal, fully certified and having already been given the go-ahead by both the Ibrox & Easter Road security staff, Police Scotland have incredibly decided to change the rules for this match on a whim.

They've now apparently taken the completely bizarre and unprecedented action for this weekend's Ramsdens Cup Final at Easter Road of putting a total ban on ALL large banners and flags being taken into the stadium by Rangers Supporters Clubs and fans.

We can of course presume with a degree of certainty that the ban will also apply to Raith Rovers fans, although it won't affect them to anywhere near the same extent due to their smaller number of fans and considerably lower number of supporters with large banners or flags.

It's been mentioned tonight that the reasoning for the Police Scotland decision is based on trying to put a stop to flares, smoke bombs and any pyro being taken into and/or used in the stadium, but with massive numbers of officers set to be out on force conducting searches and the fact that they have sniffer dogs trained to search out these devices, this explanation makes very little sense at all.

It's really quite an absurd development for the thousands of Rangers fans who were looking forward to a colourful spectacle at Sunday's Ramsdens Cup Final and perhaps raises some serious questions about the motives of certain people at Police Scotland. Are they actively trying to destroy what's left of Scottish football or are they just trying to spoil the Ramsdens Cup Final for Rangers fans?

In light of the banner banning developments, The Rangers Supporters Trust released the following statement this evening:

Just a few points ...

Hampden, Ibrox and the Scumhut are not Easter Road on a cupfinal day. What happens at the former can, but should not by default be used at happenings somewhere else. It seems clear that superversion at either of the OF grounds is different, not least the Scumhut. At any greater sports event the size of flags and banners is limited, unless all parties concerned agree to it. Generally, what Rangers and Easter Road folk deem secure enough does not need to be the same when it comes to the police, fire department and ambulances. The company I work for had to deal with somesuch at the World Cup 2006, the Women's WC, the World Athletic Championships and the like, and still does it at the Olympic Stadium for Hertha Berlin as well as German internationals and the Cup Final. Likewise for international icehockey and basketball events at the O2 World Berlin. Pending on the event at hand, regulations could very well and do change.

Has anyone actually checked what sort of flags and banners were allowed into Easter Road or a similarly sized stadium when it hosted a national cup final before? What is/was the size of flags normally allowed into such a place? I wouldn't be surprised that if they want to take it into Ibrox next week, no-one will bar them from doing it.

Obviously, we all are disappointed that the Bridgeton Loyal great flag is not allowed into that place on Sunday. I for one doubt that there is anything cynical or anti-Rangers involved here.
